Enjoy a guided tour of 12 furnished rooms in this 17th century Castle. Ghosts and villains, Jacobites and high fashion, the story begins in 1628 when the Earl of Mar built Mar Castle as his Highland hunting lodge. Associated with all 3 Jacobite uprisings, the castle was burned by the infamous Jacobite, the Black Colonel, and was the base for the Earl of Mar as he planned the 1715 uprising. After the 1745 rebellion, it was a garrison for Hanoverian soldiers stationed there to make sure that no-one dared break the law and wear tartan or carry weapons. In the 20th century, the castle was home to American fashion journalist, Editor of Harper's Bazaar and wife of the Chief of Clan Farquharson, who decorated the rooms in her signature Schiaparelli pink. English and German audio guides and tours with friendly local guides who enjoy sharing their knowledge and stories of the area. There are hidden teddy bears for the children to count as well as a small gift shop which also sells teas, coffees and hot chocolate.

If you are in the area please do stop and visit Braemar Castle. We thoroughly enjoyed the guided tour, far better than the audio guide. Our guide was from Australia but extremely knowledgable about the history of the castle and anything related. You miss a...More

This café is in Braemar right at the far end near the small island by the Braemar Show Ground. It is absolutely super, wonderful sandwiches, homemade cakes etc., and utterly delicious coffee. I thoroughly recommend it you won’t be disappointed.

Delighted you enjoyed your visit to Taste, it's a great café. I do hope you also made to the Castle. We don't have such delicious food on offer but we can do you a most excellent guided tour!

This is a very interesting castle, in that it isn't really a castle at all, in the traditional sense. It's more a manor, or house of an aristocratic family/families, but is very interesting to see how the times changed this. It shows a contrast between...More

Thank you so much for your review. We are delighted you enjoyed your visit. Yes, we are different. Most other Scottish Castles have had a single purpose or a have been owned by a single family. Braemar however has enjoyed an incredibly chequered and colourful...More

More what I’d consider a manor house than a castle it’s still worth a tour. Take the guided tour and enjoy the stories. The interior design choices are quite unique and include a lot of pink.

Yes, the late Mrs Farquharson was very keen on pink! She was a good friend of the fashion designer, Elsa Schiaparelli, who was celebrated for her use of bright pink in her designs and Mrs Farquharson love the colour and decorated everything! in Schiaparelli pink!

Nice to visit if your into a castle tour. More of a modern style furnished building if you'd like to visit. Just take a pic of outside and lovely purple weeds that are pretty.

Authentic 18th century graffiti, authentic 17th century building, authentic furniture and artefacts from 17th, 18th and 19th centuries - and lots and lots of stories! Definitely worth coming inside, we (the local community who operate the Castle) think!

I’m quite certain you don’t have to pay if you don’t go inside. The grounds are not gated so you could have a nice roam around easily.
