Popped in for an ice cream. Holy cow!! Amazing! 1 scoop of Passion fruit and a scoop of white chocolate. Blown away at how delicious this was.

Visit the centre but also the village.

Worth a visit to appreciate how and when and with whom the canal was created and built. A fantastic feat of engineering supported by the humble navvy.

Don't bother to visit.
Aug. 2020
They shut the door as we were walking towards it at 16.20.
The middle of August 2020. Lots of visitors around. They clearly think they don't need the trade. There were four people sat at a bench nearby. They said we had not missed much.
So much has been closed this year due to Covid. You would have thought they would be welcoming visitors? I don't consider 16.20 to late in the day in the middle of the week.

Dear Mandy, We are sorry to hear that you are disappointed, I'm sure if given the chance you would've loved your visit with us. It has been a challenging year for everyone and this has meant a lot of new rules have come in place for everyone's safety, which is our number one priority. This has also meant that with no seasonal workers and a new way of working, we had to limit our offer and hours as most businesses have had to do. Now that we are all a bit more comfortable and have found our feet, we have opened up our café for indoor seating, changed our menu and have been open 7 days a week from 09:00 to 17:00 for the last weeks. We do hope you get a chance to come visit us in the future. Kind regards, Caledonian Canal Centre Team

Lovely brunch
Oct. 2020
Delicious and fresh brunch, with friendly service - very affordable in the centre of Fort Augustus. There looked to be some good lunch options too. Good covid measures in place.

Lunch and Gifts
Mar. 2020
I came upon the Caledonian Canal Visitor Centre following a recommendation from our tour guide, Stewart. He’d suggested them for lunch and I can see why. The service was cordial, the premises were clean and the food top notch. In fact, I’d go on record as saying this place was home to my best overall meal while visiting Scotland during my 2-day whirlwind tour. I ordered the Caledonian Seafood Chowder (which came with a bun) and a Coke. The presentation was simple but effective, working well with the physical surroundings of the café. The soup and bun were eloquently plated on a dark serving vessel, which contrasted nicely with the white table; the olive oil and green garnish atop the soup gave it a splash of colour that “popped” out against its surroundings. When it came to taste, I have to say the chowder hit all the right notes: There was ample haddock, salmon and potatoes; the chowder itself was rich and creamy; and the bun added a nice textural contrast whilst allowing me to sop up any leftover chowder. In short, I left very satisfied with my light lunch.

Afterwards, I did take a few moments to scour the quirky gift shop where I was able to find a couple of small items to take home. I appreciated that all items were laid out nicely, with some order to them; the gift shop area did not feel junky in the least.

If you’re visiting Fort Augustus, I do recommend patronizing this Visitor Centre as it is multifaceted. It is at once a gift shop, information centre, lodging unit, and café. The selection available at the gift shop is generous; the food at the café is excellent and home-made; and the information displays provide important context for one’s touristic experience.

Not just another canal lock
Sep. 2020 • Family
I’ve seen many canal locks as I live close to the Grand Union Canal. This one is at another level with the intricacies on display. The team who operate it demonstrate a great deal of joy going about their daily activities. Well worth a visit.

We stayed here one night and can not recommend enough. Newly done rooms, clean and exactly what we needed. The balcony was an added bonus we were not expecting.

The Caledonian Canal Visitors Center in Fort Augustus
Sep. 2019
The Caledonian Canal Visitor Center is located right off the center intersection of Fort Augustus. I spent an interesting visit to the Visitors Center perusing all of it's various information and artifacts. I found it very informative and interesting and enjoyed my visit.
