About
Dunrobin Castle is the historic home of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland. The earliest part of the building dates from around 1275 and has a number of later extensions. Your tour begins at the main staircase, which leads to the state rooms on the first floor. These include the Dining Room, set with the family silver, and our Library which has over 10,000 books. You then make your way to the smaller rooms in the older parts of the castle. The Tearoom and Gift Shop can be found on the ground floor. Access to the Gardens is from the Entrance Hall. Our Victorian Museum and Falconry displays can be found in the garden. Falconry displays 11.30am and 2pm daily during the months of April, May, June, July, August and September.

- P SDevon, United Kingdom91 contributionsA bit meh for me!Many previous reviewers have rated the Castle as 5*. I have to confess being rather underwhelmed. The gardens were a bit disappointing and the price seemed steep. Yes, the building is a fairly impressive imitation of a French chateau, I suppose.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 April 2023

The gardens were lovely and the cafe was great, tasty well priced food and a good atmosphere and warming open fire. Well worth a visitVisited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 May 2023
- M. AnslikEckernforde, Germany58 contributionsNot to miss castle in norther ScotlandLovely castle to visit, stunning location atop the sea with marvealous views. The Cafe needs a refurbishment, take Highclaire castle as an Inspiration. Personal very friendly and helpful, restrooms clean and prices are acceptable for a tourist spot.Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 16 May 2023
- Betsy L22 contributionsGreat VisitThis castle is worth the trip. The inside is beautiful with furniture, tapestries and paintings. There isn’t much info on the history, no audio tour, but they have a view information panels. The highlight of the visit was the Falconry show. It was EXCELLENT, the presenter had exceptional knowledge and the birds were well trained. The gardens were beautiful as well.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 May 2023
- Cora BScherpenzeel, The Netherlands1,369 contributionsHighlight of my trip!Walking up to the castle it doesn't seem so impressive. The best views you get from the garden looking up. Located close to the coast. Great café as well, excellent food but more expensive than at other locations. Every coach operator visits it, especially in the morning. Do like I did, go and grab a hot drink, by the time you have finished the groups have gone through the interior. Loads of info and guides around. Excellent displays, furniture, porcelain, stunning bouquets with flowers of the season in every room. Museum in the garden. Falconry twice a day. Spent half a day and loved it.Visited May 2023Travelled soloWritten 23 May 2023
- Anuj_MithaniMumbai, India3,894 contributionsFranch chateau style castleDropped by here pre-opening time on our long drive to John o' Groas from Dornoch, so didn't visit inside. However, its possible to park at the lot behind the castle and walk the minor road beside the castle circling around and towards the seafront for a frontal view of the castle and grounds. A beautiful sight.Visited May 2023Written 29 May 2023
- seanandnicCarlisle, United Kingdom211 contributionsExcellent customer service.Having travelled by motorbike, the two young men on the reception were kind enough to look after our motorcycle helmets for our visit inside the castle. This was very kind and very welcome. We had a poor experience several years ago at Urquart Castle who would not offer the same courtesy. Dunrobin staff were definitely more customer focussed. Well done!Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 June 2023
- Mold LassWrexham, United Kingdom94 contributionsNot A Good Experience and would not recommendThe day was spoilt by an angry, miserable member of staff in the library who was shouting at everyone. Me for having my handbag on my back. She kept shouting, you with the rucksack, I didn’t have a rucksack on it was a small handbag you can put on your back. I was not stopped from going in with it, and nobody other this woman said anything, She then shouted at a lady whose flash had gone off. She was rude, officious and out of order. Completely spoilt our visit after looking forward to visiting. People said thank you to her and she completely ignored them. Generally staff were uninterested. The cafe was a sad and sorry place, we didn’t bother even with a cup of tea. Take a leaf out of The Castle of Mey, the staff were amazing, couldn’t tell you enough about the house, and nobody mentioned my handbag 😀 The cafe in The Castle of Mey is beautiful, with fabulous staff.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 July 2023
- Jodie BLoughborough, United Kingdom3 contributionsBeautiful house, great Falcon show, interesting g artefacts. What a beautiful setting, the rooms were lovely with plenty of detail, they had a wee treasure hunt for the kids, but really it was spot the 6toys In the rooms, which to be fair the girls enjoyed and it was easy for them. There is alot of jewelry on show which is cool. Maybe I missed it but I wanted more of a time line to see when and who owned the house and why. Seems a very English owned family. Although I did see reference to marrying in to Scottish blood. The museum is pretty impressive although morbid. I'd like to think I'd rather see these poor animals on show than they just go to waste or thrown out. But it's hard to fatholm the amount of animals that were killed for sport back in those days...... The giraffe and elephant stand out but all of the animals really. So make sure you can handle that before you go into the museum. However there are some very cool pictish artefacts and incredible jewelry and fossils also kept withi. The museum whihc is interesting. The falcon show was really good. The knowledge and the birds were incredible. The man who did the show was so nice and happy to answer questions, again our girls loved this and made the trip worth it for them. They enjoyed walking aoru d the gardens. But other than that there is no park or anything for children. And dogs are not allowed. All in all 3hours is about right and the falcon show is on twice one around 1130 & 230pmVisited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 8 July 2023
- Alex RBroxburn, United Kingdom9 contributionsA great day out. This is a true fairytale castle. The castle is wonderful with lots to see and do. The tearoom is good and had a great selection for lunch although it was Berry busy on the day we went to visit. However we were not waiting long and the haggis and baked potato with pepper sauce was excellent. There is lots to see in the castle and you could spend a lot of time looking at all the things on display. The real gem here is the castle gardens. These are spectacular and you can totally lose yourself in them. The highlight for our family was the falconry display in the gardens. This was a great event and very popular, so if you want a seat for it get there at least 20 minutes before it starts on busy days. The museum is interesting and has come good things to explore. Well worth the price of a family ticket.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 July 2023

The castle was very busy on this sunny, Sunday afternoon. Home of the Dukes of Sutherland for hundreds of years, this is a stunning castle from the exterior, with beautiful turrets and impressive sculptured gardens. My husband was fascinated with the vintage fire engine and memorabilia found in the tearoom. We had a lovely lunch of homemade soup and desserts and started our tour of the castle. Although the taxidermy display in the first hallway - of a standing stag, as well as many heads, and animal rugs, was a bit off-putting, the furnishings and decor in the castle, including clothing, toys, etc. were exceptional. It has been thoughtfully and beautifully preserved.

The cost of admission includes a tour of the castle which was quite extensive and filled with interesting artifacts. There was staff in various rooms to answer any questions. We arrived near opening time, and as a result, there were quite a number of people touring the house.
But we were able to take our time and just let those in a hurry pass by.
We finished in plenty of time to visit the falconry exhibit. We didn't know what to expect, but we both found the demonstration to be quite entertaining. We learned that falcons and hawks have been used as hunting birds for hundreds of years. These birds were obviously as attached to the handler as he was thrilled to show what these birds could do.
Despite it being mid-September, the gardens were still glorious with blooms.
We generally visit castles that include free entry from our Royal Oak membership. This is NOT one of those included, but we both felt it was well worth the cost to tour the mansion and the grounds.

We had travelled from Nairn, where we where based for a holiday. The drive there was very scenic. We parked up and walked down to this stunningly beautiful castle, arriving just before a falcon display. We rushed down to the gardens where it was being held just as it was starting. We had a talk & display for the next 30 mins, viewing the Harris hawk & a Peregrine falcon which was very entertaining and informative. There were other birds on show to view after the show at the back. We then ventured back to the house, stopping at the café first, having a cuppa and a taste of the selection of delicious cakes available. Then on to the house after a quick look around the book shop. The house is beautiful and I love that there was a fresh flower display in each of the rooms. There were plenty of staff available to get information. It was quite busy the day we went but we managed to view most of what was to see following the arrows. The gardens are beautiful and nicely laid out. I did have a shock when I walked into the museum, as I thought it would have a history of the house etc, but on entry you are faced with heads (and tails) of a vast array of animals. The rest of the museum has a selection of other animal, birds etc collected in the day and a selection of other interesting trinkets. Once I got over the first room, it was interesting and worth a look. The shop, back at the house has a good selection of Scottish things on offer and worth a look. I would highly recommend a visit to this beautiful castle.

We were travelling north with time to kill so decided to visit Dunrobin Castle as it was on our route. We are glad as it was worth a visit,& we were just in time for the first Birds of Prey display. It was amazing to see the birds we had Amigo the Harris Hawk & Robin the Peregrine Falcon they were just amazing to watch. As we did that first it was then we wondered around the grounds although being September the gardens were not at their best but still good. Lastly we went round the house which was also very interesting & a fair few rooms to see. Glad we stopped off.

Took my mum to Dunrobin castle for a visit whilst holidaying in Helmsdale. We had been looking forward to it and planned to include the falconry show and lunch. The website states that there are areas which are and aren’t available for wheelchair users, but as experienced travellers we were prepared for not being able to access all areas of the building and gardens. Disabled parking was signed from the entrance, indicating that access was available. We parked up and went to the entrance to be greeted by steps. I entered to ask about a disabled entrance and was told that there is zero access to the castle for wheelchair users.
Access to some of the gardens is possible, but it is the same price as a ticket for full access across the site. It felt very much like discrimination, the likes of which we haven’t witnessed in nearly a decade. The website is misleading, there are no concessions available and no slight attempt at making the castle even remotely accessible.
I challenged the staff on why there have been no adaptations and was given the age old excuse around listed buildings and planning permission, which in my experience is a poor excuse. After studying architecture at Greenwich university, where access had been arranged over 10 years ago on the extremely important World Heritage Site - so my mum and others could enjoy the glamorous painted hall and other delights - I can say with complete confidence that the Dunrobin site has no excuse for trying to become accessible for people with all abilities.
Very poor. Not recommended.

We stopped here with our tour group and really enjoyed visiting Dunrobin. There were several rooms open to the public with beautiful furnishings and placards in most of the rooms. I enjoyed viewing the entire castle, but my favorite rooms were the library and the bedrooms that had very intricate bed posts. The Gardens, Falconry and Museum are also a must see so make sure you allow yourself time to visit. We did not have a chance to see the Falconry show, which would have been interesting since these birds were so beautiful. If you have a chance to visit, check in advance what time the shows are.

Yep, it does look a bit like a fairytale castle, but this one is still lived in. It’s big, there is a freeform tour through some of the rooms of a couple of floors, and there is a café. Loos outside before you actually get in and again inside. There is a Falconry display at certain times, we arrived just in time so we were told, “quite near just at the edge of the gardens”. Yeah. There’s a lots of steps to go down, (and back up again after), and quite honestly, although it was interesting and educational, we have seen far more engaging demonstrations much closer to home. Hmm, maybe we’re just spoilt, it's probably very impressive if you’ve never seen one before. Anyhow, the car parking is on rather rough ground some distance away, it was a tad muddy. Worth visiting? Well, yes. But there are an awful lot of castles in Scotland.

Brilliant day out, from the stunning castle and falconry show to the bizarre (and sometimes comical taxidermy in a) trophy house on the grounds. The knowledgable and friendly falconer and austringer made the entertaining display of falcons and hawks worth the visit alone. A show not to be missed. Food in the cafe was pleasant, though you can eat your own packed lunch in the grounds.

This is a real fairy tale castle. There is a one way system, well directed, so that you can get round and see everything. The castle was very busy, and we shuffled along at times. Lots of beautiful paintings and furnishings. The gardens looked lovely from the upstairs windows, unfortunately we didn't have enough time to walk round them outside.
There were fresh flower displays, large & small all through the Castle, vey nice touch.
Toilets rather poor, but plenty of parking.
Tested the scones and tea in the cafe, where the old Dunrobin fire engine was kept.
Well worth a visit.

Dunrobin Castle and the gardens were superb! Don’t miss the falconry demonstration. The falconer Andy did a live hunting demonstration with both a hawk and a falcon. Entertaining, exciting and educational. Plus Andy stuck around to chat and let you take pictures with the birds

Are dogs allowed in the ground?

Dogs are not allowed in the castle & castle garden. However there is a nice walk around the perimeter you can do with your dog which skirts the Castle & goes along the beach. The red & green paths were Very muddy last week when we were there last week & impassable as forestry work is being conducted at the moment.

Hi all,
I am visiting Scotland in March and unfortunately it appears Dunrobin Castle is not open during this period.Does anyone know if we will be able to view the exterior of the castle from outside the grounds?
Thanks in advance.

The car park by Home Farm and Gift Shop should be accessible, if so you should be able to get into the garden area and see the house. However, its going to be try and see as the main access might not be open. If you are travelling close by it would be worth a try, but I would not make a big detour just in case!
Bonjour,
En hiver est-il possible d'aller quand même le voir depuis l'extérieur ou l'accès depuis la route principale est fermé ?

There is no gate on the front of the castle grounds. As far as I can see from the road, you have full access to the drive way and woodland. I also believe you can proceed down the right hand road beside the castle and walk along the seashore. I have posted a couple of drives to Dunrobin Castle on the scothighlands website if you’d like to see how the access is and have an idea of the view from the coast.

No but you can take them through the woodland by the castle and also around the coastline. I've posted a clip of the view from the coast on the Scothighlands website but can't share the link here unfortunately.

WE are planning to visit this castle and gardens next May, would 90minutes be enough to have a quick look and watch the falconry too? as we have a tight schedule
DSC-NOVA
Fairfax, VA2,747 contributions
Personal opinion, but I think you would be pushing it with only 90 minutes (assuming that means from the time you pull into the parking lot until the time you pull back out) if you want to enjoy your visit.
Yes, you can make it through the building, especially if you are not really into the historic aspects that abound, and you can make it through the gardens; the crunch might be the falconry exhibit. You will have to be very careful in your timing, since the bird displays happen at set periods during the day. You may have to leave before the end to keep on schedule.
One thing to consider is how expensive it is to get into Dunrobin. We had the luxury of being able to rearrange our day to expand the time at Dunrobin so we knew had a snack there and walked through the house and gardens and down to the falcons for a preliminary walk prior to the display--in short, we spent a couple hours and felt it was worth the price of admission.
hey was looking to visit this castle in November, however there website doesn't specify if it opens during November/ December so does anyone know ????
