I had read about these caves and wanted to visit even though it was winter. We hired a car for the day from Thurso. The drive out was absolutely spectacular. We stopped lots of times along the way to take photos. We got to the...More

Smoo Cave was nice for a quick stop while in Durness. The area isn't huge and will only take you about an hour to see. There are clear walk ways and the stairs are well maintain. The stairs are quite steep and its a decent...More

This is a really nice spot to stop on the northern coastline. We stopped for a snack and a drink and walked down into the cave to take some pics. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

An essential part of a tour of the North coast of Scotland. We didn't have chance to do the tour but the cave and the cove are certainly worth a visit without it. Highly recommended.

The inner caves were not open ( you have to pay for a guide on these ) but looking at the water in the caves there was no way of getting to those. I enjoyed the atmosphere near the caves and the noise from the...More

After travelling for many miles on a single track road we finally reached our destination. The countryside and the views were breathtaking. To reach the cave you have to go down a stairway which can be quite steep in places, but is well worth the...More

Magical place. SO peaceful and beautiful. Worth a visit. Careful on the steps, they can be a bit tough on the legs.

I guess so! I think that if there has been too much rain (or perhaps thawed snow/ice), they close up parts of the cave. When we were there, we could only go into the very first bit.

The steps are quite manageable, just take your time. You do not have to go on the boat ride to see the waterfall, it's just along a small passageway from the main cave.

The steps shouldn't be a problem for a person with no health problems. There are many steps. If you can climb up a few stories in a building, you can do this. There are benches to stop at if you need to.
