- Cora BScherpenzeel, The Netherlands1,589 contributionsA must see for Outlander fans and othersThe gardens are really spectacular, borders filled with flowers, shrubs, trees, loads of sculptures. For the Outlander series they filmed here, series 2, Versailles garden. There is also a short, 775 metres, woodland walk with loads of wooden sculptures. Have you got limited mobility? Drive up to the castle itself, park to get a ticket and enjoy the views from up the steps. You will be directed to a parking space which offers ground floor access to the garden. The castle itself is not open to the public. There is an excellent food truck, The frothy cow, serving hot and cold drinks salads, wraps, cakes. At the entrance is a small shop, staff are very friendly and accommodating.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 3 October 2023
- CharlottegCHCDalgety Bay, United Kingdom34 contributionsA view for all seasonsThe gardens are stunning any time you visit. The staff are warm and friendly and keen to assist in any way. It is a favourite Outlander filming location to stop at but anyone interested in history will be fascinated. The sundial is a particular show stopper and anyone who knows about the famous architect family from the 17th century will know why! The gardens are well cared for and evidently greatly loved.Visited October 2023Travelled on businessWritten 13 October 2023
- arthurjamesc17 contributionsA Must See attractionAmazing experience - well worth a visit. The beautiful sunny weather contributed to our enjoyment but the gardens and entire site are spectacular. The lady in the ticket office was very welcoming and helpful in giving advice about the gardens. There are so many beautiful and interesting things to see but it is not too large that you are overwhelmed or worn out exploring it all. Everything is so well maintained and cared for with a great atmosphere of calmness and serenity. Driving up the magnificent tree lined avenue is an experience in itself and gets you suitably attuned to enjoy the gardens.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 October 2023
- jacm949Dumbarton, United Kingdom147 contributionsGreat Place to VisitSuperb gardens in the grounds of Drummond Castle. The castle is not accessible however the keep is. very large estate, the gardens have a beautiful layout harking back to 18th century. Good small shop, no cafe but there is a drinks & snack van. Lots of seating through the gardens. There is also a good woodland walk with wood carvings to find - good for kids (& adults!).Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 July 2024
- NXWWest Sussex, United Kingdom363 contributionsUnmissable DestinationFabulous gardens, an unmissable destination. I loved the symmetry of the layout along with the colours. Dog friendly, with adequate parking and a coffee van available for your refreshment needs. I enjoyed the drive along the mile long avenue of trees from the entry gates. Overall it is very peaceful destination Entry in to the site is a little bit hazardous due to restricted view of oncoming traffic when driving from the Crieff direction. Also the exit is via a single track road. It would be nice to view the interior of the castle/house but I understand there is a private family in residence.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 July 2024
- Dunedinhen173 contributionsFabby views and good walk.Amazing place straight from when you enter through the gates! We spent at least 4 hours here so not bad for £2.50 per hour. The steps were OK but we skipped a couple of flights by walking up the paths at the edges of the gardens. There is a disabled carpark with easy access into the gardens if you need this facility. The map provided gives you details of all the planting in the main garden and also the woodland walk and the pond path. Lots of seats to rest on in all parts of the gardens and we took advantage especially as it was quite warm and sunny when we visited. If was very dog friendly which is a bonus. Good sniffing around the woodland walk. The coffee truck was a welcome bonus after the climb back up to the entrance and a great view over the gardens.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 19 September 2024

Lovely garden, clearly very well maintained. But it lacks character, and at £10 for an adult is far too expensive. I have been to more varied, more interesting, just *bigger* gardens, including formal ones like this, for £6 or £7. I'm glad I've visited, but I feel no pull to return unlike many gardens that I have visited.

By the time of our visit, the summer heat had had its effect and the garden looked somewhat tired. Many of the acers had suffered leaf loss. As observed by Himself2, the vegetable garden had gone wild and wasn't at all attractive. The refurbished multiple sun dial was impressive with a good explanatory display and video in the tower. Overall it was still a pleasant garden and hopefully will look better next Spring.

We visited the gardens on a bright, sunny day in September, and there were still plenty of blooms to enjoy. The grounds are lovely, and there is quite a bit to see while visiting.
There are several flights of stairs to get from the main level to the gardens, so if you have mobility issues, you might need to consider that.
There is a small shop where you pay the entrance fee, with some souvenirs to purchase if you are interested.
We chose to have lunch at the Frothy Cow, which is a food wagon located on the grounds of the garden. There are picnic tables where one can eat, as well as some benches. We chose the egg mayo and a slice of Lemon Drizzle to split. The sandwich was very large (we were happy that we shared). Both items were quite tasty.
The food truck also has specialty coffee drinks in addition to hot sandwiches and pastry treats. The price was quite reasonable, and the operator did take credit cards.
There was a free parking lot that has restrooms in a corner building for your convenience.

What a fantastic garden and very historically important. Beautiful planting and lots of colour, everything well cared for. Lots of parking, the toilets are on the car park and there is a short walk to gardens. Lots of steps as its terraced. Coffee and cake stall on the top terrace and lovely little gift shop. Staff really helpful. I have a historic houses card so went in on that but I thought entry was reasonably priced because there is so much to see.

The formal garden is quite beautiful and the best place to view is the balcony above. Sadly the vegetable garden was more a collection of dead plants so definitely an area to miss. There is ample car parking space and the toilets are modern and spotlessly clean. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit but thought the entrance fee of £10 was a bit steep.

Came mainy to see the unique Scottish obeiisk sundial. This has been experltly restored. The castle and house are remarkable blocks of stone shaped to perfection and awe inspiring. The entrance drive between the beech trees is worth visiting in itself. Good car park and excellent 'facilities.' The entrance price is reasonable and the staff member was very friendly and informative. The shop is small but adequate. The gardens lack seating except at the cafe area. A very good cafe in a horsebox with good prices and high quality food. The gardens are superb with many interesting statues, a grotto, lochan, waterfalls, etc. The range of Scottish apple varieties is worth a look and the greenhouse ranges were well stocked. Everything well looked after and the robot lawn mowers were entertaining!

There was light rain when we visited but we were able to spend a couple of hours in these impressive gardens. Lots of interesting statues and an ancient sundial. Once all the flowers come out it will be spectacular! Many different fruit trees and a garden shop. Very helpful ladies in the ticket office.

This stunning garden with castle backdrop near Crieff is simply beautiful. Open from 1100 to 1700 there is plenty of parking and toilets near the main car park. Though entry to the garden is via a number of stone steps, there is a disabled car park offering level access to the lower level of the garden.
Well worth a visit.

Can you picnic in the gardens?
Written 11 July 2019
I believe (I’m late with the reply) that in the part outside the botanic garden you are allowed. Not sure but probably.

è possibile raggiungerlo in estate utilizzando mezzi pubblici da Stirling o Edimburgo?
Written 29 January 2019
Search for Stagecoach on the web they are the biggest bus, coach operator in Scotland and i am sure their timetables will help point you in the right direction.

You can stay for as long as you want - minimum 30 minutes if you frog marched round but why would you want to! . It’s such a tranquil place that you need to spend time there - we loved standing on the top looking down on the gardens! A lovely place to visit!

How do I arrive if I take a bus from Auchterarder?
Is it a far walk from Crieff?
Written 12 May 2018
I am so sorry, I do not know. Went with a small tour. Check the bus routes. Very easy to get around Scotland by bus. Very reasonable and reliable bus service there. Enjoy your trip!

How long do you suggest to stay in the gardens to visit them properly?
Does anyone know which part was used as The Versailles' gardens in "Outlander"?
Thank you!
Written 17 January 2017
Thank you for your questions. An hour is about average for a visit. It does depend on what you want to get out of a visit. Outlander used different locations in the gardens. If you watch the episodes that included the Palace Of Versailles you are bound to spot some of the gardens.
We open for the Easter weekend then daily from May to October. Come and take a look.

How do I get there using public transport on a weekday?
Written 12 May 2016
You would get as far as Crieff, but it is quite a distance to walk if you do not get a cab! No busses there from Crieff.

Drummond Gardens Questions & Answers

“Are you open when it suits me other than advertised opening times. I'd like Drummond Castle to be open on dates of my choosing please. Plus I'd like somebody there to meet and greet all my family and friends as they turn up through the season. I'd also like a personal dog waste collector to be on call 24 hours a day. I want all the steps removed and wheelchair accessible slopes put down. I think an elevator, or two, should be fitted in Drummond Castle too with private key access for my family and friends only. There will be a lot of other requests made as our visiting dates get changed around, but I believe these are the main ones for now. Although coffee shop, restaurants and better toilet facilities will have to be installed naturally. A free gift shop should be open 24 hours and free guides offered throughout the castle and grounds. When all this criteria is met we may come to visit over the next 5 years, however I must insist work on these changes should begin immediately. With thanks in advance for your help.”
