On your way to Church Ope Cove you pass Rufus Castle (also known as Bow & Arrow Castle) perched impressively on a rocky outcrop. It dates back to the 12th century but only the keep remains. Openings in the walls are just large enough for...More

Stop at Church Ope Cove and there are 4 things to do: Rufus Castle; Church Ope Cove, St. Andrews Church Ruins and Portland Museum. Well worth a stop

On the way down to Church Ope Cove, we walked through the graveyard which contained graves of pirates from hundreds of years ago and it was extremely interesting. Lots of the gravestones were so old the lettering could not be read as the lettering had...More

To be honest, the best part of this is seeing the views around the place rather than the castle itself. The castle is substantially ruined, which is disappointing and, for me, not worth the effort to go there for. The area around though is so...More

Although not worth visiting purely for the castle, it is a nice sight and something to aim for along the coastal path around Portland. The beach nearby is pebbly but very picturesque. You can't get in to Rufus Castle so it is only look from...More

You can only see it via public footpaths, but one of the most evocative places on the island, with great views out to sea.

It's a ruin you have no access to... But... You go for the whole of church ope. Not just the castle.

The castle is in private hands, and one cannot visit the ruin. However, there are some nice views of the castle from the South West Coastal Path and the small lane on the side of the castle.

We passed by the ruin of the castle on a treasure hunt. Not much of the castle left now but can see why this was built as the view out to sea was uninterrupted and would have provided excellent strategic positioning in years gone by....More

You can't get to the castle or see anymore than shown in the pictures in the reviews but worth going for the ruins of the church and pirate graves. A walk down to the cove is worth it too but don't make a special trip...More

Hi , it does not appear to be on a bus route. Suggest train to Weymouth and a taxi to Rufus Castle ( the castle is a ruin, its more a place for the view and small beach). The Portland Museum is right by it but this is not... More
