The South Devon Railway is one of the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the region.

The former GWR branch line runs along the stunning valley of the Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes on a 14 mile round trip. The steam trains offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and people of all ages.

The railway also has a fascinating museum, gardens, riverside walk, locomotive restoration workshops, a gift and model railway shop, refreshment rooms and more.

Free car parking at Buckfastleigh, just off the A38, midway between Exeter and Plymouth; Totnes is a 500 yard walk from the main line station.

We had a very enjoyable ride on the train to Totnes at the far end of the line. Where we enjoyed a wander around the shops and market. The shops in Totnes are a fair walk from the station so be prepared. The train ticket is not cheep, but I guess it must be comparable, there was cirtainly plenty of... More

This was the first time that I had visited the railway, having ppassed it on many occasions before and I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. The train services were well planned and apart from a minor hiccup at the start the services were on time and full. The coaching stock was in good condition as well. So overall thoughts well... My friend recommended the Totnes to Buckfastleigh steam journey to us and it exceeded our expectation with the friendly environment and interesting displays at both stations. We were unable to pay with card due to a line being down at Totnes station but we got round that. Would suggest that finding the steam railway at the back of the main... More

“Thank you very much indeed for such a great review and we’re so pleased you enjoyed your trip on our railway: we look forward to seeing you again! Thank you for your comments about the signage at Totnes too. Unfortunately, we have no say in what signage goes where as the land is not ours. The main line railway company... More

A great experience, even more so that it was free as we won a free trip. The train and station were all well maintained, staff friendly and a really enjoyable experience. Our two young boys loved it!

We got the joint ticket for the train and otter sanctuary and we had a great day out. The steam train ride was fun and its nice going back in time. The gift shop had plenty of gifts and model trains. The café was nice. This is worth a visit if you are in the area or a train enthusiast.

On arrival at the main station ( Buckfastleigh) we knew we were in for a treat, that old fashioned feel hit as soon as we saw the musical van in the car park playing beautiful tunes. I took my wife (not a train fan but here for me and our son) and my mentioned 4 year old son, to the... More

Such a lovely place to visit, the line is about seven miles and takes about half an hour to get from Buckfastleigh to Totnes. Very friendly staff and the kids loved the journey and the museum. We arrived at lunchtime and ate in the cafe which was very reasonably priced and the food was lovely and homemade. A bit expensive... More

This was a superb family outing. Its so good that you can enjoy it even in the rain. The little touches were sublime; when we entered the ticket office there was a coal fire and all the staff were dressed up and ever so friendly. It wasn't cheap but was defently worth it! Thete was a muesuem which had lots... More

Must be honest, this was my husbands idea for a day out and I was a little apprehensive. However, I shouldn't have been. What a lovely, relaxing and beautiful day trip. I thoroughly recommend this trip plus a walk around Totnes in between trains.
