About
For thirty years during the Cold War, the silo at Delta-09 held a Minuteman II missile at the ready to respond to a Soviet attack. Today, visitors can view a missile in the silo through a modern glass enclosure. Delta-09 is a unit of Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. The Visitor Center is located immediately north of I-90, exit 131. The Launch Control Facility Delta-01 is located ten miles east of Delta-09. (reservations required for tour) and the Delta-09 missile silo is fifteen miles west of the visitor center.

This is an interesting place to stop and learn more about the nuclear proliferation during the cold war and the people who manned these missile sites. Unfortunately, the highlight of the tour where you actually get to go into the underground missile control facility is currently closed due to Covid restrictions. Which is ironic since for a good part of the tour you are in a small 4ft. x 20ft. hallway! I guess you can' get Covid bunched together in a hallway, but can in the control room! I would suggest you wait until the control room is open before taking this tour.

We made reservations in advance following the instructions on the website. The control center underground capsule tour had re-opened post C19. This is a highly unusual tour for the NPS as our group of 6 was escorted by a highly knowledgeable ranger through the entire facility where the missileers worked for 30 years to win the cold war. Highly recommended. Plan in advance and you will enjoy the experience and learn how the facility operated.

The audio tour is excellent! Signage was good. However it closes at 3:00!!!! Fortunately, although we arrived at 3:00 the Park Ranger was just arriving to lock up so he let us take a quick look which was very nice. We took a few pictures then listened to the audio tour once we got on the road again. The audio tour has pictures and is broken into short 1-3 minute segments. It would be appropriate to listen to on the way to visit or during your visit. (Or even after your visit as we did.). With COVID-19 the Visitor Center was closed and there was no place to stamp your passport books-which was disappointing for the kids.

Located just west of the Minuteman visitor's center, this stop dovetails with what you have just seen and read about at the center. It consists of a former missile silo with a deactivated (so they say!) missile that you can look at through windows. The silo is a short walk from the parking lot but even in September it was hot and dry. There are public restrooms on the property.

This is more for adults, just because young kids would be bored. I absolutely loved it but you need to also attend the museum down the road. Very interesting movie and write up's. My group left feeling happy and very grateful for every day we have on earth. Many kudos to the military!!!

Took a fascinating tour of the Delta-09 Minuteman nuclear missile silo. At the height of the Cold War there were over 1000 silos spread across the Great Plains. The tour is self guided from above, but very encompassing. Definitely recommend since it adds some stark reality to history.
The Delta-01 control center is nearby. Tours are available but you can’t currently go down into the underground facility.

Decided at the last minute to stop by and glad we did. The proper tour was booked up and I had read that's the only thing worth doing. However, now that I've been, a tour would have been nice but this particular self-guided site will be worth it to some. 4 stars because a ranger was actually there! He had worked at the site and shared personal insight. If the ranger wasn't there, possibly 2-3 stars because you would have to read the signs and possibly do the telephone tour if you have reception. That wouldn't be as lively as hearing about the site in person and talking to someone knowledgable. Ranger brought up the movie "War Games" and if you grew up with that movie, it may cause a chuckle because it's probably the type of Cold War scene you imagine, seconds away from nuclear warfare, when the reality of manning these stations lacked such drama. (I marked travelled as solo because there's no family option w/o children. Some of us drive around our senior parents. That's family last time I checked.)

Not really much to see, but that is the whole idea, I think! Right off I90, if it was an active site you would not have a clue as you drive by it. My father helped install some of these sites in the late 50's, though I think he was further north. This location is well maintained and informative. The top of the silo has a glassed top that allows you to see a dummy missile and how it would look were it live.

Don't miss if you are on I90. An interesting memorabilia from the cold war -- this decommissioned missille was used for training . It is a 1/2 mile drive from I90 exit 116 (on a gravel road) . There you see the missille through a glass ceiling/roof. This gives you a good feel for what it was like living in the area with the missiles below you. You can dial into a cell phone tour which is interesting although somewhat too detailed at times. There are rest rooms there as well. Free to enter. If you go here, be sure to go to the Minuteman Missille National Historic Site at exit 131. Note that Delta 01 needs advance reservations that are hard to get.

We didn't take a guided tour, but this was a fascinating site to visit, having lived through the Cold War. Although many missiles have been dismantled, this one is preserved - no doubt as a reminder that we don't want to turn back the clock. The site is easily accessible and you can actually look down the silo containing the missile. An important piece of history.

How much is the cost to visit the visitor center and just delta 09?

The visitor center and Delta-09 are both free. The only admission is for going down below grade at Delta-01. You can drive to both without needing an escort.

No advanced reservations needed here. The silo site is open daily from 9:00 -3:00 Mountain time. A cell phone tour explains the features of the silo. A glass dome allows a view down the silo at an unarmed training missile.
