This is a pretty little drive in the northern Black Hills region. Frankly there is nothing spectacular here, but there are a few natural attractions (listed separately) that are not far off the roadway and worth a stop.

My husband and I drove the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway as recommended by staff at the Black Hills Visitor Center. It was very beautiful! Bridal Veil Falls was right on the byway so you didn't even have to hike to enjoy it! A beautiful drive...More

It was a nice drive, but growing up in the Rockies makes it hard to rate more than 3 stars. There are places with more breathtaking views. But Spearfish holds its own, great town.

The scenic byway is captivating. We were in Spearfish Canyon to ride motorcycles. The views did not disappoint. It is one of the most beautiful rides I have experienced.

Lovely drive. We only made one stop at Bridal Falls, a lovely waterfall. One end just off I90. Needles Highway is the best drive if you have limited time.

So a bit boring for young children but great views. I'm glad we took the drive, it was nice but not anything unexpected if you've done a drive like this.

The drive was beautiful. We have been all over on our trip so our kids were bored looking at more rocks and trees. Spearfish has loads of places to eat. It is a nice little town that seems to be growing judging by the road...More

Good drive. Drove it both ways. I think it was more impressive driving towards Spearfish, but both ways were worth driving. We did find a 'gateway' to several backcountry roads that took us to some beautiful areas of the Black Hills. A few areas to...More

Drove this scenic byway from Deadwood to Spearfish as recommended. Very pleasant leisurely drive. Glad we drove it, but nothing really stood out as a scenic byway compared with other canyon wall drives. We stopped at the waterfall viewing area, and mostly watched other people...More

Took the kids for a drive. Our first stop was spearfish falls trail, quick 1.5 mi round trip. Ate lunch at the restaurant then traveled to Rough Rock Trail. That was a fun one and the falls were beautiful!

Several hours depending on number of stops. Great restaurant across from the Spearfish Lodge and also the location of best falls which take about 30 minutes roundtrip to hike down and back up. Two other falls in Canyon worth... More

It took us several hours as we stopped several times to enjoy the scenery, wander around, take pictures. You could do it in 2 hours or up to 4.
This may be a silly question - but do you have to start in Spearfish to drive the byway? We will becoming from Deadwood so wondered if we could start at the end and work our way towards Spearfish?

We took 85 and went up 14a to Spearfish. At the junction is an awesome restaurant. It has the best Indian tacos and excellent breakfast. You can walk at the first falls.
