Description:

The history of Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum began in June...

The history of Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum began in June 1975 when the legendary aircraft carrier USS Yorktown entered Charleston Harbor. A few months later, the USS Yorktown was dedicated as the first ship of the Naval & Maritime Museum on the 200th birthday of the United States Navy. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum was officially opened to the public on January 3, 1976. Today the museum consists of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10) with 29 aircraft on display from WWII to the present; the USS Laffey (DD-724), a Sumner-class destroyer; and the USS Clamagore (SS-343), a GUPPY III submarine. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is headquartered here and their official Medal of Honor Museum is onboard the USS Yorktown. There is also a Cold War Sub Memorial and Vietnam Support Base Camp on the surrounding grounds.

This was a great place to see. My husband served in the Navy on a submarine and I had never seen a ship or submarine. We had a really great time. Staff was friendly, helpful, and very informative. A lot of walking and stairs, but they do have a small bus that will take you across to the ship, which... More

My family of 5 stopped at the Yorktown for a tour on our way out of Charleston. We were impressed with the size and the quality of the self-guided tour. It was very easy to follow and even the youngest (age 6) enjoyed it. It is costly, it cost $91 for our group to tour the ships. We were there... More

We were traveling with 2 young children & they absolutely loved being on the aircraft carrier. They loved seeing all of the planes & my husband and I enjoyed the rich history. My favorite part was getting to enter Apollo 8 and go through a "simulation" experience.

For the price you get to see the Yorktown (carrier) the Laffey (destroyer), an old submarine, the Medal of Honor museum, and the Vietnam experience. A wonderful piece of history to be shared with the whole family. The Vietnam experience is superb, highly recommend it!

This would have been a much better visit if it wasn't 85 and muggy but that is Charleston in the summer. Great history lots of photo opportunities kids enjoyed but were beat walking up and down the stairs in the sweltering heat.

I was in Charleston for a wedding and decided to check out the Patriots Point museum - glad I did. The centerpiece of the museum is the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown. It was built in WWII and saw service throughout the war, was modified after the war with an angled flight deck, and remained in service until 1970. The ship... More

My son graduated from the nuclear prototype training unit in the Navy and graduation was held at Patriots Point. The perfect spot to hold this perfect ceremony!

Aircraft carrier, submarine, airplanes, and more. For any young child, or for any adult, this is the place to dream, learn, and be excited. As an added bonus, a Medal of Honor museum is on the Yorktown and visitors can learn about those who gave more than ever expected for their country.
