Springwood Cemetery goes back to 1812 when the first person was buried there. It's an easy walk from downtown Greenville and is pretty large for a city cemetery. The first president of Furman University is buried there along with other folks. Lots of old headstones in very good condition. Veterans of many wars, infants, transients and paupers are all interred here. It's a pretty, peaceful place, a good place for an end of the day walk. Open sun up to sundown.

If you like walking through old cemeteries you will like this one. It's well maintained and we saw many different types of grave markers. The first burial here was in 1812. The graves of unknown confederate soldiers are one of the first things we saw as we drove through the gate. They have a potters field in the NE corner of the cemetery. I especially loved all the iron fences/gates here.

Across the street from the Home2 Suites Downtown is the historic Springwood Cemetery. It is the oldest municipal cemetery in the state, the first person being buried in 1812 I believe. One of the more unique features of this cemetery is the number of marked Confederate soldier’s graves. There are around 80 marked graves of unknown confederate soldiers as well as another 120 or so marked/named soldier’s graves. The cemetery is marked off in sections with a map explaining each section. Covering several acres, we found it to be an interesting look back in history.

This is the white cemetery for Greenville, the black families were forced to bury their dead across the creek in what is Richland Cemetery, where it is bounded by the recycling center, cellphone communications tower, and fire station.

Springwood is quite pretty, with many mausoleums for the wealthy families bearing names of foundations that now distribute portions of their estates each year to charitable organizations working to undo the evils of men.

There is a significant section of the burial ground devoted to the civil war dead, and outside the gates of the cemetery, sits the memorial to the confederacy originally erected in the center of Main Street, but graciously relocated with much hullabaloo by some very wise and forward-thinking leadership to a less prominent and terrifying location; with the dead, rather the living.

The burial grounds are well kept, and still in active use.

It's actually a very pleasant place to eat lunch or read a book, away from the traffic of Main Street, on a pleasant day.

I worked downtown for two years and on my lunch hour I would take a stroll up to North Main often. One day I decided to take a peek inside the cemetery and I was pleasantly surprised.

The cemetery is much larger than I thought and contains An interesting mix of headstones, mosoluems and fencing. The oldest is from 1812 and also contains the remains of unknown Civil War soldiers.

Worth the time to learn about Greenvile’s Former residents.

We were interested in visiting this cemetery since it's the oldest municipal cemetery in South Carolina and we also wanted to see the unmarked graves of the unknown soldiers. Most families had their own cordoned-off areas and we were surprised at the many small headstones for children who had died before age two. Headstones were old but beautiful. Small confederate flags adorned hundreds of graves. There were at least 1/2 dozen men mowing the grass and every inch of the cemetery was beautifully kept. If you like visiting cemeteries, you won't want to miss this one.

There's a LOT of history in this place. Most people, even locals born and bred here, have no idea of the famous people buried here It's a very intersting day trip to get to know the founders of our city/towns in the area and looking at how old some of these graves are!

The cemetery was located across the street from my hotel and I had some time to explore. I love historic cemeteries!! It was so peaceful and serene to stroll about the grounds. There is a whole section devoted to unknown soldiers of the Confederacy. So many old & deteriorating gravestones. A lovely place for a stroll and contemplation. I do recommend--great history!

My husband and I drove through this historic Cemetery that dates back to 1812, when the first burial took place. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the oldest cemetery in SC with many above ground graves.

You can even find two dogs buried here! Confederate soldiers, and more. Some are simple graves, some statues.
