About
The Museum of the Reconstruction Era at the Woodrow Wilson Family Home is dedicated to showcasing the post-Civil War Reconstruction period and is housed in South Carolina's only remaining presidential site. Through a multifaceted interpretation, The Museum of the Reconstruction Era interprets Columbia’s late 19th-century history in order to dispel the myths of Reconstruction that are so prevalent in society today. Please note that the hours listed are open garden hours. Gardens are free and open to the public seven days a week. Tours are available: Wednesday – Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance online up until midnight the day prior to the tour, OR tickets may be purchased the day of the tour at the Robert Mills Gift Shop. All tours begin at the Robert Mills Gift Shop, 1616 Blanding Street; please plan to arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled tour time. Tours are guided and last approximately 60-75 minutes.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This truly is a Museum of the Reconstruction (with a little bit of Wilson info sprinkled in). I learned somethings I didn't know about that time in US history. Also, the surrounding homes are quite lovely and you can walk around those gardens for free.

The house itself has been carefully and thoroughly restored. It almost bare of furniture and furnishings. Instead, it contains mostly descriptions of Wilson's life and philosophy.

If you are looking for information about Woodrow Wilson his childhood home in Augusta is much better. First of all to get tickets you have to go to the gift shop at the Robert Mills House and Gardens complex. The Wilson house is about two blocks away. Tours are on the hour rain or shine and if you have AAA make sure you show them because there is no mention of its discount from them. The house has been restored to its original appearance on the outside but most of the inside is bare because they do not know what it looked like. There are a few pieces of the Wilson's but most of the items are just period pieces. A few short videos are shown and some history is given but most of this tour is about Reconstruction and racial relations. I do not know if the State is over what they can or can not say but a lot of it is omission and down right lies. It is the typical Civil War was fought to end slavery and afterwards the Northerners (carpetbaggers) were sent down to help rebuild the South and the whole time Southerners, rich and poor, were being mean to blacks. I live in an "African" American neighborhood and have been the "token" white person most of my life. I also know how to read and through my experience and study know when I am being lied to. Skip this place unless you just want to walk through the house Woodrow Wilson lived for about four years of his life. Stop the hate people we are all in this together.

Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States lived at this home briefly (about 4 years) during his childhood. The home is very well keep and has some original furnishings but very little in the way of historical mementos of the President . If you want to learn about Woodrow Wilson this is not the place to go. The tour guide rambled on about her subjective view of the politics of the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War but seemed to know very little about the house and even less about President Wilson, such as his date of birth, etc. Not really worth the time or money for a tour; a drive by of the house would suffice.

Our Woodrow Wilson House tour was well worth our time. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. She provided a lot of information on Wilson and his time there during his teenage years. The information on the Reconstruction period was also interesting. The house itself is a beautiful trip back in time.

That this was rated only 61st in Columbia at the time of my visit is hard to comprehend. The renovation of the home is very well done. It is not a Woodrow Wilson shrine; it explains his boyhood in the context of the Reconstruction era in which he grew up, and teaches a great deal about Reconstruction in the South in the process. The displays are very well done, and the information is tightly and clearly delivered, especially the videos. If you want to see chairs and beds, go somewhere else. If you want to see a period house and learn about the times that influenced a region, a nation, and this particular president, don't miss this when you come to Columbia. Congratulations to the staff who have prepared this experience; our guide, who happened also to be the director, was superb -- if the others are like him, it's an impressive team of curators and docents.

The Woodrow Wilson house has been refurbished and is an excellent historical site to visit. They have some great information on Wilson's childhood, early Columbia, and Reconstruction. A must see for history buffs. Not a whole lot for kids.

The boyhood home of President Wilson, restored and beautiful. This structure was saved from demolition and is now a lovely place to visit. While tours of the interior of the house are by appointment, one can stroll the grounds under the shade of towering magnolias. Yes the front gate is unlocked, so a visitor may walk right up to the front door and peek inside for free.

When we visited the house, our tour guide was a graduate history student studying at USC. Along with the history of the Woodrow family, she told us about Restoration and how Woodrow Wilson was shaped by the era when he was raised. The house was beautiful; however, the tour was more than we expected.

our visit to this house was most interesting. The tour guide was very knowledgable and knew her subject in depth. The house itself is beatifully retored and laid out in such a way that the true facts are dispalyed without prejudice. Would definately recomend this house.
