Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a small, 1.5 floor museum and not as I had expected. I thought there would be more authentic pieces of history to look at. My 8th grader has to pick places to go for a social studies class, and she was supposed to learn about the Fireproof Building. Not much was written about that on posters, but there was about the restoration. I printed out the scavenger hunt from the attraction’s website, which kept her interested, otherwise it could have been boring. We spent 1.5 hours, but you could easily do this in 30 minutes-1 hour. Adam’s at the front desk was polite and loves his job. A little pricey for entry.

Lots of favorite parts. Interactive videos depicting historical figures telling their story. Old documents to read. Great history of the area. Building is fire-proof with architectural details to make it so. Could have spent more than two hours there.

We stumbled on this museum while walking around Charleston, and we’re so glad to have found this gem. Beautiful building with well-thought out displays about the European colonists, the indigenous people who first lived here, slavery and its legacy on the state and the history of the enslaved Africans and African-Americans who built Charleston’s wealth and much of the city. Very illuminating overall.

The museum is only one of the three floors. It does not take long to see as it does not have a lot on exhibit. Some exhibits have modern pictures. It is somewhat disappointing considering all that they have in their archives. There is a movie, etc... The interior of the building has been completely redone and the old look is lost.

The museum is well organized with interactive exhibits exploring aspects of centuries of history with artifacts such as Swamp Fox Francis Marion’s REV WAR powder horn and Flintlock pistol, aspects of slavery, pro and anti-secessionist views as well as the environment and more recent historical and cultural aspects.

This museum is a collection of archives of SC history, and we paid $24!!! It is one floor that took us 45 minutes to go through. We should have gone down the street to view The Charleston Museum. We were so disappointed, but did not have time to see the other.

The South Carolina Historical Society Museum is Charleston's newest and most engaging museum in the city. Six rooms of fascinating material and incredible interactive displays introduce visitors to the history and culture of South Carolina. The approach is refreshing, intriguing, and stimulating. The exhibit creators receive an A+ for the work they have done in putting the many high-tech displays and video together. Kudos go to the architects, too, for transforming a 200-year-old building into a state-of-the-art museum. It is worth a visit just to see how a museum can captivate a visitor.

I am from MT...after visiting here and listening to Mitchell (the docent there), I came away with a new perspective of the Civil War South. This is a wonderful Museum. I sure did pick a great museum to visit, when I chose this one! Thank you so much to the friendly helpful front desk attendant. A special thank you to docent Mitchell...it was a pleasure learning what you had to share, you are a credit to this museum and to Charleston. If you only visit 1 museum in Charleston...I strongly suggest you choose this one!

This is a great museum for late elementary age kids and up… Michael Coates is an excellent ambassador with infectious joy about the culture and areas of interest and history in Charleston. Only one dollar… a must see :-)
