The first trip of the day allows you to view or be a part of the flag raising ceremony. Last trip allows to see the flag being taken down. A great part of history and also offers some stunning views of water and city.

Ferry to Ft Sumter should be on everyone's list visiting Charleston. Up close and personal view of National Park site. Civil War era history is narrated on ferry boat while you watch the dolphins in the harbor. Museums at either end offer more detail. Favorite thing was the musket demonstration.

Approx. 2 hour tour. 30 minutes trip by boat to and from Ft Sumter. One hour exploring the fort. Reasonable price for this tour.

We took the 30 minute boat ride from the visitor center to the fort. Had 1 hour at fort. Restrooms at fort not working due to hurricane, but you can use boat facilities at any time. Rangers give history talk and there is small museum. Very interesting.

Fort Sumter is an important piece of US history. It does sit out in the bay and its about a 30 minute ferry ride to the island. Get there early in order to buy tickets for an early time slot. The ferry is nice, relaxing, and they tell you the history of Fort Sumter while you ride out to the... More

I took a boat ride out to Fort Sumter. I learned a lot that I did not know about the history of the South. The fort itself is magnificent and I was amazed at how they are able to keep it so well maintained out on that island.

Figure 2.5 hours from departure to return. The ferry ride was about 20 minutes each way. Lots of information shared over the loudspeaker. Once to the island take advantage of the stories from the park rangers.... Wonderful for history and to think back to how those tumultuous times must have felt. Good opportunity to walk around the fort and island... More

But it didn't deter us. The water taxi was a bit chilly going over (and every traveler sat in the enclosed downstairs on the way back). Overall, the informative history was welcomed and concise. The fort was very cool to experience up close. For anyone interested in Charleston history, a Fort Sumpter visit is a must. If you're looking for... More

So awesome. My inner geek was flipping out. The park ranger, Antoine, was great. Funny, teasing, and very knowledgeable. You have to take a ferry to the site so being a light jacket just in case, being on the water can get a bit chilly. It was a site to behold. Yeah, the fort isn't what it was in 1861... More
