Took the Historical Tour of the Old Exchange

Delightful tour guide, clearly enjoyed his job. Good balance of history, culture and local anecdotes. Worth an hour or more of your time.

My kids begged to go here because they already knew about some of the history from school and wanted to see the dungeon. While it was a little bit interesting, it was not at all what we expected. The tour guide made lots of silly jokes and tried to be in character. I think some appreciated his "performance", but I... More

This was one of the few museums that were open on Sunday. It has a lot of history but the exhibits were a bit boring. You can get more of the story by going on the dungeon tour but it really doesn't make up for the lack of truly interesting exhibits on the top two floors.

For a good feel of Charles-towne (original name of Charleston), this is a good place to start. One of the oldest buildings in Charleston. The brickwork to the Provost area is remarkable and beautiful. The tour of the Provost was a bit pricey for a 30 minute tour, but it was filled with lots of good information about the area.... More

We stopped by in the middle of the day and decided to get the joint ticket for this stop and the old slave mart. The top two floors weren't much to see but the basement had a guided tour that was fantastic. Our tour guide said he could trace his family back several generations and was super knowledgeable. It was... More

This visit will introduce you to the pirate history of Charleston, the Charleston tea party, architecture that was borrowed from Europe, and the original wall of the City of Charleston before the marshes were filled in and the city expanded. George Washington visited there. There is a great display by the DAR. This is an especially good trip for kids... More

Take the time to speak to the staff. They love the job and it shows. So much has occurred inside these walls be sure to appreciate where you are. The highlight was seeing the original city wall dating to the 17th century in the Dungeon. To be able to look at real history is worth the time.

The self-guided tour was ok, one can breeze through it in fifteen minutes or so. The real fun is the tour of the dungeon, which is quite eerie. It was used as a prison at one point and there are whispers that it is haunted by those prisoners (many of whom were pirates).

A great place for both a history buff and those just wanting information about old Charleston. The staff was very friendly and wecloming and help set the tone for your visit. The smaill tour was interesting, informative. There is an abundence of historic pictures and items to look at and read. It really makes you appreciate the history of Charleston.
