We only visited Charleston for the day as we were staying in Savannah. It is a sort of city version of Savannah. This house was really different than others. It belonged to a Washington lawyer and couldn't believe that the family sat at the dining table in their dining room. Wow!!! House was filled with antiques, was a shame as... More

This is a very interesting place to visit. The mansion is jam packed with antiques, antique furniture and artwork. If it is to be believed the owner and his wife still live there albeit not all the time as the owner is a Washington DC lawyer. It's hard to imagine that they use the sitting area as there isn't a... This tour was a little disappointing. This home is different from the others we visited. It includes many collections of the current occupant/owner, but most are unrelated to Charleston history. The home is impressive, but you do not get to go into most rooms, they are roped off and you merely look into the rooms from the hallway. Was interesting,... More

Sorry that you didn't fully enjoy your visit, but most of the first two floors of the Edmondston-Alston House are open. The third floor is not because it is a private residence. Also, the historical contributions of the home give it unique value. It was at the Edmondston-Alston House that General P.G.T. Beauregard watched Fort Sumter after giving the order... More

This was such a disappointment. The people who bought this house did a remarkable job of restoring it and then crowded it up with garish antiques and even worse with stuffed animals. What a waste of money and effort.

Not your typical tour of an old home, but I liked it for that reason. This is an amazing collection of antiques & art. If you love antique shops, architecture & art museums then this place is for you. If you want an old house tour, this is not for you. Even tho they tout the "35 rooms" you only... More

If you do your homework first and realize that the home is decorated with the current owner's collection and not period items, then it is pretty cool. Amazing items and neat house. But expensive.

The house, the architecture, and the grounds are simply beautiful. You have to overlook all of the collectibles to appreciate the home's character and beauty

Visited the Calhoun Mansion. The owner's personnel antique collection is on display and it is somewhat over the top. The price to tour the house was steep but our guide was knowledgeable and very friendly.

I last visited this house before G. Howe III sold the house in 2004 to the current owner, H. Stahl. Since the sale, my enjoyment of this home has ceased. The current owner, has over 5000 "pieces" in this house, which just seem part of his ability to collect as his wealth allows. Though is wealth may allow, imo, this... More

Very interesting way to see a historical residence. The home was built in 1876 by a very wealthy man. No expense was spared. I love the architecture and the attention to detail. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and personable. A little pricy, but overall a nice experience.
