About
The Pat Conroy Literary Center educates and inspires a community of readers, writers, and teachers in and beyond our home in the South Carolina lowcountry. In honor of our namesake, one of America's best-loved writers and truth-tellers, the Conroy Center continues Pat Conroy's courageous and generous-hearted legacy as a teacher, mentor, advocate, and friend to storytellers of every kind. The nonprofit Conroy Center is South Carolina's first affiliate of the American Writers Museum and second American Library Association United for Libraries Literary Landmark. Voted as Favorite Local Museum in the 2019 Eat Stay Play Beaufort "Best of Beaufort" Awards, the Conroy Center is also winner of the 2019 Civitas Award for Tourism Leadership, presented by the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Pat Conroy is my favorite author. It was a joy to visit the center. The two ladies who were hosts were absolutely wonderful. One being Pat’s sister and the second a retired FBI agent turned author.

    Nice tribute to Pat Conroy
Small museum/literary center but a must if you are a Pat Conroy fan. The docents will give you a rather informative walkthrough of the center. Lots of photos and memorabilia from Pat and his family. Book store is well stocked with all of Pat's books and many other items.

Loved the Pat Conroy Literary Center.
We arrived 15 minutes before closing on Veterans Day, November 11th. We were met with the most friendly and gracious staff member who proceeded to give us a very enlightening tour of the center. We loved learning about Anthony Johnson, the mixed media artist and we will be following him in the future.

    A gem in Beaufort
My husband I visited the Pat Conroy Literary Center in November and we loved it! It is not only a moving tribute to Pat Conroy, but it is also a place to celebrate literature and the freedom to read. I would heartily recommend it.

A wonderful celebration of a beloved author
We knew we couldn't leave Beaufort without visiting this museum. It exceeded our expectations. There were all kinds of letters and mementos from Pat Conroy's life and his writing career. We attended an author lecture, and I even (a bonus!) got some great tips for promoting my own book. We gained more insight about the man and his craft.

Julie Becker on the Pat Conroy Literary Center
The Pat Conroy Library Center is interesting, unusual and informative on many levels. We stopped there partly because my dad, Steve Becker (also a novelist) had always spoken so highly of Pat Conroy. to see his books, his life and his experience teaching in the island communities was absolutely fascinating.

    A reader’s treasure!
The Pat Conroy Literary Center is a treasure in Beaufort. The Center has so much information and photos from Conroy’s life. The Director, Jonathan Haupt, was wonderful in sharing special stories and insights.

A wonderful visit from a knowledgeable docent
This trip was my second but the first for the others in our group, including my husband who had read none of Pat's books. The story of Pat's work was especially inspiring especially his commitment to mentoring students and aspiring writers. We were not hurried and had ample time to view the exhibits. I purchased one of his books, My Reading Life, and found it filled with meaningful reflections to which as a retired teacher I could relate. The Conroy Center is now on my list of places to suggest to people who visit the Lowcountry.

What a wonderful tribute to an amazing man!
I have loved Pat Conroy’s books for decades and I was lucky enough to visit. They have done a fantastic job to honor such a legend. The Center is absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing his life with his fans.

    Excellent experience
The materials are fascinating and really tell Conroy's story. What made it special was Kathy's generous, charming, funny elucidation of the various pieces. By the end we felt like friends invited right into the Conroy home.

I have been a Pat Conroy fan for decades, and recently have become enthralled with Cassandra King Conroy’s novels and memoirs. Visiting you site was very special to me. However, once I arrived I was constantly bombarded by an older male volunteer who felt obligated to walk me and my friends through every room, explaining every artifact, and generally hovering over us so that it was very difficult to enjoy what we were trying to see. He even went so far as to read some of the materials under glass to us, when it is obvious we would have preferred to read the items ourselves. Now, being a good Southerner I will end with comments with something positive to say! I was thrill to be at the Center, and I will definitely plan to attend again at some point in the near future. Thanks for all you do to promote the literary legacy of both the Conroy’s!!!!!

We visited on a Saturday, and were lucky to get one on one attention from the Executive Director who took around to the exhibits and memorabilia and gave us backstory and details. It was interesting to me, a huge fan, as well as my partner who was a casual fan but found the stories fascinating. Absolutely worth the visit, and I am excited about the new author I picked up from their new(ish) imprint!

A personal, information-rich exhibit that is maintained by Pat Conroy's family in place of a memorial. When we went, Pat's sister showed us around and showed us points of interest and she was phenomenal. The center is clearly rooted in the community and is full of character. It can be a quick visit or you can spend a long time reading letters from Pat and his family and looking at memorabilia. We were not charged an entrance fee so we bought some books but if they start charging it is worth it. The center felt safe during COVID.

As a Pat Conroy literary admirer I found my visit very enjoyable and informative. My first visit in February of 2022 provided a pleasant surprise when I met Pat's sister Kathy who was voulunteering her time at the center. We had a very pleasant conversation, mostly about Pat. This year, February 2023, I revisited the center and continued to read and enjoy the abundant information and personal affects relating to Mr. Conroy. You can pay a small fee, I beleive $10.00, to have someone walk you through the building and provide information, or you can browse on your own for free. I opted for the latter and was not disappointed. Either way I beleive if you are a Pat Conroy fan you will thoroughly enjoy the experience. Books and momentos are available for purchase and there is a container available for contributions. There is no fee to tour the center. The center is about the size of a medium sized ranch home and there is adequate free parking. There was no traffic congestion during either visit and it is just a few blocks from the downtown area of Beaufort, just off Bay Street.

Had a lovely visit to the Conroy Literary Center in October. Located in Beaufort, the center is a wonder of the history and context of Conroy’s writing. I had the good fortune of having his sister Kathy as the docent which gave the visit an intimate sense of “being told the story” of Pat Conroy’s life through books, letters, memorabilia and memory. Wonderful site.

As an avid Pat Conroy fan and fellow South Carolinian, I was thrilled to stumble upon the Pat Conroy Literary Center while visiting Beaufort. The history and memorabilia were so interesting and we enjoyed chatting with the owner/friend of Conroy's while we browsed. I highly recommend you stop in if you're a Conroy fan, if you're looking for a peek into the life of one of the South's favorite storytellers, or if you just need to get out of the rain. You won't be disappointed!

If you’ve ever been transported to the Carolina coast by the beautiful writings of the great Pat Conroy, this is a must stop on your travels through S. Carolina. To have an intimate look at the beloved author’s memorabilia, writings, and photos galore, is to feel as if you have had a chance to pay your respects to the writer whom so many of us love. If you’re a fan of The Great Santini, do not miss the letter Santini himself wrote to his family as a rebuttal to the book that laid the family’s life bare.

I never had the chance to meet Mr. Pat Conroy in person, but I am humbled to have browsed among his personal collection of books, touched his desk, and have seen the lovely city of Beaufort where the Pat Conroy Literary Center is located, and which Pat so lovingly wrote about in many of his books.

Even if you've never read Pat Conroy, a visit to this literacy center will give you a feel for who Pat Conroy was as a person and the amazing history of Beaufort, South Carolina. Cathy gave a great tour of the many ways Pat Conroy has touched Beaufort. He taught at Daufuskie Island in the early 1960s, touching the Gullah Community closely. He met with Martin Luther King, Jr. and other Civil Rights leaders at the Penn Center. The Literacy Center is a peaceful place to sit and read in their front porch rocking chairs with a water view and their own Free Little Library. You can learn which of Conroy's books might interest you as well as other authors who were his friends and acquaintances. You can buy many of the books there tax free. Definitely worth a visit! (But note their limited open hours.)

Spending time at the Pat Conroy Literary Center made me feel like I'd arrived home. Reading his letters, I had my own personal walk through my youth experience. Pat Conroy captures the universal human experience in the most authentic way. A must see when in the Beaufort area.
