Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I came across this monument while on a walking tour. It is beautiful and a great way to quickly teach young people about history

This monument requires only a couple of minutes to read but do yourself a favor and Google this gentleman to learn one of the most interesting true stories you will ever hear. There are several other sites nearby that relate to his story but they are within easy walking distance.

I had never heard of him before we went to Beaufort and now I can't get enough of His Story. Its a short walk from the downtown shopping area.

We walked by Robert Smalls monument on Janet's Historical walking tour and also saw his house. He was a slave who had experience in handling a ship and so he was allowed to work on a Confederate war ship. The soldiers in charge went into town one day and told Robert and some crew to pick up supplies and come back for them. He commandeered the ship and supplies and picked up some slaves and delivered them to the Union army. After the Civil War was over, he successfully bought his old master's house on a tax sale and become a congressional representative. He showed that if given a chance to succeed, the black slaves could be very successful. Very impressive story.

There isn't much too the monument but there is to the contribution of this great African American prior slave. The historical significance is great and his contribution to the civil war.

Also highly recommend passing by his home also located in Beaufort, it's worth a stroll.

A simple bust monument with a great quote next to Tabernacle Baptist church he helped to start. His story is one of devotion and hard work.

Robert Smalls accomplished great deeds in times much more troubling than our own. Have Charlotte tell you his story on the Southurn Rose Carriage tour and have Janet add to it on her walking tour.

This statue is a tribute t0 a remarkable story about a slave born in Beaufort, freed, to become a landowner and Congressional Rep in D.C.

I'd never heard of Robert Smalls, but I was extremely impressed with what I read about him at the monument as well as at the Reconstruction Era National Historic Site visitor center.

Take the Southern Rose Carriage ride or look up Robert Smalls in advance. You will truly be amazed at what one child slave did early in life and stunned by what he became and how he finished his life. A truly inspirational story.
