Built in 1810, Linden Place magnificently reflects the prosperity of the DeWolf merchant princes and the exquisite taste inspired by the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. Visitors see one of the best examples of Federal architecture, from the Palladian windows to the fluted Corinthian columns, which flank the front entrance and the four-story spiral staircase. Tour highlights include tales of DeWolf family exploits, from their privateering and slave trading to their financial ruin and triumphant return to prosperity during Victorian times. Docents introduce visitors to family members Pomeroy Colt, founder of United States Rubber, now Uniroyal, his mother Theodora DeWolf Colt, who as Madam Colt ran Bristol Society from Linden Place as if she were Queen Victoria and the great actress Ethel Barrymore who married in to this most prominent of American families. Visitors are also welcome to stroll the sculpture-filled gardens where they will find Greek bronzes and an 18th Century gazebo.

We loved walking at our own pace through this lovely home/mansion. It has been kept with period decorations, furniture and draperies. We enjoyed the signed pictures from elected officials and movie stars. The children's room were very interesting. Kept in good condition and extremely well maintained.

It is a beautiful elegant house, I was impressed they had guidebooks AND the stories on the wall to follow through every space throughout the house.

Beautiful building, furniture, and art in this historical gem, with a nice tour outlining the history and early development of the area. Linden Place is also wonderful for weddings or other special functions.

We were in Bristol for the day so dropped by the Linden Place on our way to Blithewold. For the admission fee, we got a dedicated tour guide that gave us a very nice history of the past occupants of this house. It was this history that made this trip worthwhile. The house, itself, was decorated for the Christmas season... More

This mansion is worth a visit, to see its furnishings and art and learn the history of its past owners, who were very tied to the slave trade in Rhode Island. We went on a walking tour of the neighborhood with someone from the mansion -- it was very interesting and recommended.

This mansion is not huge by any means but probably larger than most people's homes. It is simply but beautifully decorated for the holiday season. Furnishings inside are beautiful and the holiday decor does not interfere with what you see. The tour is relatively short (about a half hour) but definitely worthwhile. You can go to Newport to see over... More

My husband and I love visiting historic homes, and this gem is in the center of downtown Bristol. Lovely rooms, artworks and original family furnishings. A must-see!
