- Try2TravelSustainablyHamilton, Canada401 contributions2nd best museum in AmericaYour ticket is good for two days and you will need it. The large museum is well set up. Lots to see from Indigenous history to the innovations that make Pittsburgh a world leader on many things from sports or science.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 October 2023
- Michele CollumPittsburgh, Pennsylvania44 contributionsGreat visitAttended Hometown Homegrown for our first visit since moving to Pittsburgh. The event was really crowded and not as fun as I had hoped, however, the museum was not gm crowded and was an overall great experience. We intentionally doesn't explore the entire place so we could leave more to discover on our next visit.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 November 2023
- Pamela S4 contributionsDefinitely recommend !Our hotel was conveniently located just two blocks from here!!! We really enjoyed the local history - highlights were the sports history - especially since we are Steelers fans and the Mr Rogers area. There is something for everyone here! You could spend the day or spend a couple hours. Would definitely recommend !Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 November 2023
- MarvelousCorning, California5 contributionsAbsolute must if you have a few hoursWhat an amazing museum! First of all, children are free. Isn't that the way it should be? Next, the museum is put together so well with interests all in one area so if you want a certain thing you can just go there and not have to filter through everything. And last, but certainly not least, if your are a Pittsburgh Sports Fan this place is for you! Wow! Reliving the moments was great. Absolute must if you are visiting Pittsburgh.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 January 2024
- joeblack06622 contributionsA great museum for everyone!A fabulous museum! I’m a visitor from the U.K. on my way to Punxsutawney for the Groundhog Day. Had half a day and came to this amazing place. Learned so much about Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania as a whole. Fun things for children and the displays are out of this world.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 1 February 2024
- Danielle P20 contributionsThis ranks as a top museum hands down ….I greatly appreciated all of the history presented throughout this museum and look forward to going back. It can easily be a few hours. I toured middle of week with low attendance which was superb as I was able to really spend time at some exhibits reading and looking over. I spent 2 hours there and 6 floors of artifacts, historical reviews and stories was not nearly enough time. The cafe was decent enough. The gift shop was quite nice with wide variety of items. This is a great option to take your young kids as well with some highly interactive areas. I enjoyed the history of Pittsburgh and spend a lot of my time on that floor. It was fascinating to go through the time periods. Look forward to my next visit and seeing the women exhibit they are working on.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 9 March 2024
- Trey_walkerRaleigh, North Carolina7 contributionsWell Done Museum, Great Info about the CityWOW! This is one of the most in-depth museums I've been to. An incredible tribute to the city's history as an industry and cultural capital. Prepare to keep yourself moving through the museum, as you can get fatigue quickly with information overload. I am personally a sports fan, so I spent the most time on that floor but there is just so much here. Friendly staff and well priced. I would dedicate half a day here.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 March 2024
- Pam.A.Toronto, Canada51 contributionsI would have needed to spend a day here if I saw everything. One could truly spend an entire day here! Make sure you start at the top. If you don't want to take the stairs up to the top floor at least take the stairs down (if you are able). There is snipits of great information on the stairwells. AND if you take a paper and have it stamped on each floor you get a little gift from the gift shop ('Little' so don't get too excited). But it's still fun to do. This history center is great for history buffs and sports fans AND fabulous for people who love trivia.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 25 April 2024
- greglinmonLas Cruces, New Mexico1,042 contributionsA great museum, a great dayWhat a great museum and site. It is so much to take in but we'll worth the visit. Never dreamed that Western PA contributed so much in so many areas. Quite remarkable. As a life long Steelers fan I loved those exhibits but the Mr Roger's area was so cool. The exhibition on slavery was powerful. Lewis and Clark...etc. very nice staff working this site. My sons who are 15 and 16 enjoyed it.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 June 2024

They've got Nelly Bly's famous gladstone bag (which she took on her 'round the world voyage). And quite a good exhibit on Pennsylvania sports, if you into that sort of thing.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 19 June 2024

This is a large museum with 6 floors of history and a broad perspective centering on or incorporating Pittsburgh. Visiting for a few days I focused first on the exhibits I can't see anywhere else: Heinz Ketchup and Mister Rogers.
The Heinz exhibit offered a good bit of history of the company and the challenges Henry Heinz faced getting started and growing the business. Also a fun trip down memory lane. The Mister Rogers exhibit was lovely, focusing on him and who he was, his background and the show he created. Tis left a bit of time for other exhibits, but such a large museum could be visited again to truly appreciate all it has to offer.

My wife and I spent many hours in the Heinz History Center on a recent visit to Pittsburgh. I was especially impressed with the "neighborhoods" sections, which not only included a Mr. Rogers area, but artifacts about the different ethnic groups that lived in Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh innovators exhibit was also fascinating. And, for all of you sports fans out there, admission includes the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum. Obviously a large portion of that area is devoted to the three major league teams based in Pittsburgh, but there is also a section devoted to the Negro league teams, college sports, and high school sports.

Found ourselves with a few hours after airbnb checkout and before our next event, and we easily ran out of time! 6 floors of exhibits made it easy to spend time on those in which we had the most interest. The Pittsburgh Innovation exhibit had so much history...Mellon, Carnegie, Westinghouse to name a very few. The Mister Rogers exhibit was nostalgic and wonderful. Enjoyed the tribute to Senator Heinz. And the HJ Heinz Company exhibit was amazing...did not know horseradish was the first product. This was a fun museum. Ample parking on a Sunday afternoon. We utilized Grant St parking garage, $5/day Sunday.

This is a great museum by any standards. Set in a former Ice warehouse over five floors it is worth the entrance fee alone for the collection of old fire engines, trams and vehicles and the special exhibition of the art of John Kane, a Scottish emigre to Pittsburgh in the 1930s. But then the upper floors house permanent exhibitions about Western Pennsylvania during the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763) and the Second World War as an industrial and armament hub, a history of glassmaking is n the area, of the H.J. Heinz company and a floor containing a vast treasure trove of historical artefacts over the last two centuries.

The museum is like an insiders view to Pittsburgh. The exhibits really brought back some great memories. Climbing up into the the streetcar and taking a seat really brought back the memories. You could almost hear the loud clanking as the streetcar traveled over the Smithfield Street bridge. The layout of the museum was planned well and well thought out. There’s plenty of space to move around and the exhibits are spaced nicely so overcrowding wasn’t a problem. If you’re looking for a museum that shows what Pittsburgh is and about the people who make up Pittsburgh this is a great place to go.

We chose the following exhibits that interested us as we did not have all day
The place talks about Ketchup and the company.
Since I’ve been a faithful Heinz Ketchup user my entire life I was very curious about the name and the company’s 150 old history.
Here you learn more than just ketchup, but also of some of their other 5000 products. (Did you know ketchup moves at .028 mph, slower than a snail?)
On display are old commercials of ketchup, Morris the Cat, and Charley the Tuna. There is a recipe book from 1869, and walls of displays and artifacts showing how the company grew from a farm stand. An unusual old artifact is the pickle pouch the salesman would carry.
We liked seeing the Mr. Rogers exhibit. Did not know the baseball stadium, Ferris wheel, gas station and the polio vaccine came from Pittsburgh

I came for the Ketchup and stayed for the rest of the museum.
I was surprised with the amount of memorabilia and artifacts that this History Center had to offer. I wanted to come here so I could see the exhibit on Ketchup, but spent about 2 hours walking around all the other exhibits that they had on display. There is a vast amount of history to walk through ranging from sports to wars, the museum really has a bit of everything. It is a great location and allows you to then walk to many other attractions as well. While I was hoping for more of the Ketchup/Heinz history, the other parts of the center did make for a good impression. I don't know if I would take kids here and expect them to be entertained, but for adults, I think it is a great way to spend the afternoon.

I think this place could have alot to offer, but the exhibits need more explanation. If I weren't from PA, I wouldn't get half the people. It's neat that a museum like this exists, but they need to take a hard look at the communication. The Westinghouse exhibit and miniature room were exceptions. The staff in the railroad room was amazing.
Our visit was colored by the fact that we paid to go and it was a free day for people that had PMC or some insurance. It was crowded for no reason--those people just wanted free food. Had we been told upon entrance they were having the event, we would have come another day. I hope they advise guests in the future if that is the case.

We attended a memorial service at The John Heinz Historic Center. What a great venue for an event. The museum has everything “Pittsburgh”. Although we didn’t get to tour the entire museum, it appeared to appeal to all ages. There were interactive exhibits for both children and adults. The Heinz ketchup exhibit was neat to see, but I definitely couldn’t leave without seeing a piece of my childhood, the Mr. Rogers exhibit. What a nice tribute to an American icon. The museum consists of six floors, with a mixture of exhibits on each floor. If you’re looking to pass some time while in the city, and learn a little about the history of Pittsburgh, this is worth your while.

Our family of 4 (ages 13, 14, 40 somethings) visited the museum. Overall, the teenagers seemed to enjoy it. Our only complaint is we often didn't know where to go. The map was a bit confusing to us. The second floor had arrows and footprints. But, didn't find those on other floors. Coming off the elevator, we weren't always sure which way to go. We surely missed things. Somethings were kind of behind us. The exhibit name didn't always match the words that we saw painted on the walls.
A lot to read. We spent over 2 hours. By then, everyone was tired and hungry.
I wish they gave you additional days in between visiting this site and the other venues that the same ticket was honored at. You had to visit the next day and we already had something else scheduled. It doesn't let families get the full value of the ticket which is disappointing.
Overall, glad we went. In the future, I would have cleared two days so that we could have visited this site and the other places that our ticket could be used at. So we could get the full value.

I would like to know if the boat that Henry J Heinz sank in the Allegheny river with all of the supplies that his competitors could not purchase or get their hands on is still there or if it was later raised?
Written 5 September 2019
I can’t say I’ve heard of this boat, and didn’t see anything at the history center about it. There is so much to see there, it is worth the visit. Maybe one of the docents or staff would know more.
Written 5 September 2019
how many hours would you say would be best for this museum?
Written 29 August 2017
I would allow at least three hours. Enjoy!
Written 29 August 2017
Usually $5 most days in the lot across the street though sometimes it is more if there is an event at the nearby Convention Center. Even if the lot says $10-15 tell them you are going to the Heinz History Center and the lot attendant will charge you $5.
