- ElaineW201564 contributionsPerfect for a rainy dayIt was raining so we decided an indoor market was a good place to start the day. We were not dissatisfied. Breakfast was made with produce straight from the farm. The vendors were knowledgeable and friendly. Overall a great way to spend a leisurely Saturday morning! Can’t wait to go back.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 October 2023

- JanetRt66Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania10 contributionsUnique and fun visit in downtown Lancaster. The Lancaster Central Market was fun, delicious food and a unique market. Glad you recommended it. Caution... if you park in the parking lot - be sure to push the button for the ticket when you enter. You need it when you exit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 October 2023
- Songbird865Pueblo, Colorado557 contributionsLots of good looking food.Lots of prepared food stalls ans several produce. I was expecting more crafts and amish/mennonite fare etc. Enjoyed walking around and seeing the variety offered. The goat stall had great goat cheese with cherries and something different-goat sticks (as opposed to beef). Prices very reasonable at the coffee stand. A nice outing but do not plan to spend a lengthy time here.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 June 2024

When you shop at Lancaster Central Market at Penn Square in the heart of Lancaster City you become a part of a living history. This is America's oldest farmers' market building. Since the 1730's farmers have been bringing meats and vegetables to the site for sale to local residents. Many of today's standholders have been "on market" since the early 1900's.

Good selection of things other than meat and cheese. They also had Amish handmade goods, homemade dog treat vendors, some ornaments, and other gift able items. When we went a few weeks before Christmas, they also had live music (orchestra).

We were visiting the area and needed to see this community of vendors on a Saturday Morning. Great selection of fresh meats, cheeses, produce and baked goods. Artisans producing a variety of home and personal needs. Jams, jellies and honey. Too much to list. Most all are shoppers are friendly and accommodating as it is tight quarters. Vendors were all informative and gracious. A great experience. We wished we lived closer to be able to shop here regularly. The few things we purchased and enjoyed were coffees from the Mean Mug, Scones from Zig's Bakery and on the way out we had some of the guacamole from Guacamole Specialists.

We were lucky enough to be in Lancaster on a Tuesday which is one of the days that the Lancaster Central Market is open. This market is an indoor facility with a number of shops selling food, Amish products and crafts. There were lots of interesting things on sale and the market feels pretty authentic and not kitchy or too touristy. We had a great time browsing and purchased some preserves, spices and handiwork items to take home. After the market we wandered around the downtown area which has a bunch more shops selling handicrafts and artist made items. This was a fun half day adventure.

It is a large farmer's market and neat to experience once if you are visiting. A nice time consumer on an early Saturday Morning. Most of the products are perishable meats and produce, awesome for locals. Cheap prices like $4 for two fresh turkey breast filets, but seafood is overpriced (as it should be in the middle of PA). The Amish vendors are very welcoming. There are a few cultural vendors, including Greek, Mediterranean and Puerto Rican. Would go once if in the area on the weekend.

The Central Market was smaller than I envisioned. Their building is beautiful. It was 98 degrees the day of our visit, so all of the doors were open. Unfortunately, we had a large breakfast an hour before. I would have loved to try a beef empanada from one of the stands. In the alley behind the market, there was a jazz band, a lady twirling a baton, and a magician.
Parking is across the street in a garage. It's a very short walk to the market. We spent half an hour there and it costed $2.
I would return on our next trip. We will bring empty stomachs!

Loved the historic building and all the local vendors. My husband spent 6 weeks in vin Lancaster as musical director for the Peoples Shakespeare Project. He had a studio a few blocks away and was able to walk to Central Market and buy fresh food to cook. This was a big pluscto his stay. There was a mix of trendy ethnic cooked foods to eat at nearby tables and then fresh produce and meats from local area farmers. Herbalist selling tinctures and medicinal blends, bulk tea, honey/jams, empanadas, pretzels, and some handcraft items to boot. Some Amish and Mennonite farmers as well as traditional family farms, some organic. There was limited seating indoors for takeout dining and public bathrooms. We like supporting local economies as much as possible and the meatsxwere much cheaper than back in NYC Farmers Markets.

Great local market with a variety of vendors in the heart of downtown! In the historic central market building you can explore rows of vendors from coffee to flowers to pretzels to produce and more. Parking garages in the area and street parking by app meters on the streets around. Grab a coffee and a pretzel and stroll the market for gifts and food for meals.

As county town markets go its pretty nice. Smaller than I was lead to expect and not as much variety. You can walk around it in a couple of minutes. Some interesting food stalls if you want a quick bite to eat. Gets crowded at lunchtime especially if there is a conference at the Marriott. Guess I have been spoilt by the large one in Philly. Its not worth travelling to see but it’s a nice little stop off if you are in Lancaster and just exploring. Its opposite the marriott and is not that well marked so look carefully. I was there last in February it might be different when its not freezing cold and snowing.

All of the booths that were open provided fresh or preserved goods that were of high quality. They offered many options to purchase and the price range for the goods were acceptable.
It was not overly crowded and parking was very close in proximity of the Market.
However, many of the booths (33%) were empty. It was a Friday late morning early afternoon. The expectations were that almost all vendors would be in attendance.
We were able to make several purchases and left the market after about 90 minutes. Definitely content as we exited.

When is the best time to visit with three kids? Any breakfast options inside? We will most likely visit the Friday, week before Halloween.

Midmorning on Tuesday or Friday is best. Many items for sale to eat for breakfast and a few tables available. More seating upstairs.

They are open year-round Tuesdays Fridays and Saturdays and they open at 6 AM. I would check the website in case something has changed and major holiday closings.
