I had the good fortune to climb up to various Lookouts along the coastline on my two week trip down from Brisbane to Sydney. My friend in Terrigal took me to a couple of them close to where he lives (lucky man). The Skillion provides yet another opportunity to marvel at the majestic Pacific Ocean and look down on Terrigal beach. ,

What I like about many of the paths and coastal walkways is that while they are sometimes quite steep, there are convenient handrails and steps for the more adventurous parts of the way. And if the day is warm and sunny with plenty of blue sky, there is no better way to spend your time than visiting places such as this.

On our way from Sydney to Newcastle we stopped over at the Terrigal Haven Beach for a fish & chips break, and accidentally came about knowing the iconic Skillion lookout that was visible from the benches we were enjoying our lunch on. We couldn't resist this open invitation to scale the mount, and hence up we went.

Terrigal is a major coastal suburb in the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia, and is a little over one hour drive from Sydney. Terrigal has become a popular tourists' destination for its vast coastline, beautiful beaches, and iconic Skillion Lookout. It's also called "the fastest town in the world" due to its world-renowned resident Usain Bolt, the 100 meters & 200 meters record holder. Yes, the world's fastest man lives here.

The Skillion lookout is worthy of the climb and the panoramic view of the vast ocean and the surrounding coastline that you get to see at the end is just amazing. Although the climb does demand an average health condition, the local council has made the climb relatively easy by providing a paved path and intermittent stairs with railing and benches to rest, on one side of the grassy knoll. For those blessed with normal health and are born with an adventurous tendency can walk the grassy field going up and then roll down to ground-zero. Too bad parents with strollers or persons on wheelchairs don't have an easy option available. On your way down the hill, the spectacular view of Terrigal Haven, the grassy landscape, the beach and beyond takes your breath away.

The entire public park in this area has been landscaped beautifully with many playgrounds for different sports and activities. Number of free parking lots are also available. At the beach front, we saw groups of people busy in various activities like surfing, swimming, scuba diving, basking in the sun, canoeing, or sitting on the embankment and in shaded area simply admiring the view. Few men were busy in a nearby shack cleaning the catches (fish, crabs, lobsters) from the ocean and feeding the hungry flock of waiting pelicans with spared portion. The locals also call it "The Haven", and truly so because this is what you feel upon setting a foot on this place; bliss, peace, tranquility, and serenity. A great place to visit with family for outings and to spend a whole day on with kids and friends!

First off we didn't climb the hill. I know, so lazy! But not everyone was up to the task so we decided to wander around amongst the rocks at the bottom for a bit instead. We were still fairly entertained. Let me say, keep your eye on the tide! If you're a bit further out towards the sea and it starts coming in you can find yourself suddenly upon an island surrounded by water if you're not paying attention and then you have to plan a new route back in. You also need to pay attention to where you step as some of the rocks might be a tad slippery due to algae or just being wet and falling on rock and shell is never fun. It's a nice little scramble among the rocks though and there are small shells to find if you look. See, even if you don't want to or aren't up to the challenge of that frankly intimidating hill those loons are running up there is still something to do in those rocks.

This lookout has a wonderful view over the ocean and it is a great location to watch the whales pass when they are travelling either north or south.

The walk was not as difficult as portrayed in TA reviews I’ve read. Relaxing with good views and some exercise after lunch at the Reef restaurant.

Visited on Friday 15th February. It is a fairly steep climb to the top, with good walking track and some steps. When you get to the top you get amazing views of the rocks below and back towards Terrigal Beach.

A wonderful spot to see the coastline. When in Terrigal, I try to walk the skillion for the view. It also gets your heart pumping!

Having walked from Norah Head Lighthouse, my friend and I staggered to the top of the Skillion. It was worth it though, with wonderful views. A great way to end an eight hour walk.

The walk up The Skillion certainly gets the heart pumping and it’s a great bit of exercise. To make it a little easier there is a concrete pathway with seats if you need to rest. When you get to the top the view is spectacular. Up and down the coastline and across Terrigal. Well worth the visit.
