Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A really lovely little museum of Tathra which gives you some fascinating glimpses of local life, now and in the past. The swish of the ocean under your feet is an atmospheric backing track to tales of shipwrecks, steam lines, farming and aboriginal rites. Wonderful stuff, and only $2 for entry! The attached cafe is very groovy and glamorous, with delicious coffee, cakes, sandwiches and artworks available ... but not cheap: $17 for a veggie roll, $35 for a length of rope, $50 and up for some of the ugliest ceramics I've ever seen. But still worth a visit, if only to see the cow portraits!

Really nice to see the wharf restored and even nicer to visit the museum. It's small and nothing flash but it is worth a look. The displays are really interesting and the staff were so friendly and only too happy to chat.

Loved this wharf jutting out into the bay. Spent some time reading the history and watching for whales on this lovely spot. Locals and tourists were fishing and having coffee with friends. Checked out the cafe with Breakfast in mind but the limited sour dough menu was not for us sadly as this is a lovely venue.

Last weekend we've been there, we saw whales not far away, they were changing the breath, flap the tails on the water.

The cafe (needs a separate entry from the Museum, as they are in same building but separate entities) is a delightfully rustic space, with counter ordering service (wait staff bring food to your table). You can sit outside too, and there are amazing views of the Tathra coastline and out to sea (this is the only open sea wharf remaining in the southern hemisphere, apparently) . The offering is wholefood-based and artisan or home-baked produce. Lunch menu consists of various quiches, salads and sandwiches (some food is warm). The cakes and desserts are very impressive! They offer natural juices and teas etc (no alcohol). We had a vegetable frittata with sourdough and salad, and a Turkish ham roll, followed by lemon citron tart and pear frangipane tart. All very good, the only downside being the music, which we thought was awful! Better no music!

The wharf at Tathra is the only remaining timber wharf on the eastern seaboard in Australia. It has been repaired and restored many times over the years and is now a tourist attraction in the town. Small children should be well supervised as there are no railings.
The storage shed has now become an interesting little museum restored mainly by locals.
There is a small coffee & cake shop below the restaurant but it wasn't open when we were there, so I cannot comment on that.
The museum, although small, was quite interesting and gives an insight into the shipwrecks in the area and history of the wharf . At a nominal $2 entry fee, it is worth the visit. The money, I imagine, goes to the upkeep.
Parking however is very difficult. It is now a no- through road (a storm washed away the rest of the road) with only a handful of parking spaces at the end outside the museum. It is a two way road but certainly NOT suitable for caravans or large vehicles as turning around whilst cars are parked there is somewhat difficult.
Apart from the beaches and walking this is the only tourist attraction in Tathra I believe.

A really wonderful small museum with interesting history of the area and a nice cafe downstairs. I really appreciate the volunteers to keep this place going. Very glad I visited.
