Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful location. We were lucky enough to see whales (Anna Bay end). It's free which is great unless you want to undertake one of the many available activities - camel rides, dune buggy rides through the 32km long sand dunes, sand surfing. Lovely little cafe at the Anna Bay end and some great walks. Well worthwhile.

The sand dunes can be seen from miles away and they tower over the beach from Stockton to Anna Bay about 30 kilometres. we walked along the beach and enjoyed the view however many do quad biking or sand surf. Sadly the beach area near Stockton itself is suffering badly from erosion. well worth seeing!

If you are visiting the area with a car, head to Birubi Point Surf Life Saving Club/ Birubi Beach. If you have already done dune safaris/ sand boarding/ camel riding before (as we have) head out to this spot to admire the dunes and beach.
Allow an hour or 2 to walk at the beach, climb a dune and click your pictures. There is a coffee shop/ rest rooms at the start of the beach where you can relax and spend time leisurely.
Be sure to be well protected against the weather.

This wonderful area used to be open to campers and recreational vehicles. It was a fun day out for the family, free for all to enjoy. The dunes which naturally have no vegetation were a perfect and safe playground. Then came big government. They started by charging for entrance. Then after that they banned the innocent act of camping. After that they put ridiculously low speed limits on the beach. Finally they banned vehicles from entering the dune area. It's hard to even take a photo now of this wonderful coastal dune area without having a sign in your frame telling you what you can't do. The only thing that's allowed now are tourist operators. Don't bother coming here, it's over governed and there are simply better places.

bring your sand board slide (wake board or equivalent) + 4wd and save yourself a fortune. The local 4wd bus companies take you on a 5min drive and you can easily do it yourself and spend the savings on a nice lunch

We went to the dunes on a tag along 4 wheel drive tour. The guide took us to a largish dune and showed us how to get to the top and back down safely without rolling the car. Then we were off for a trip down the dune line. Then we came across this Huge.... dune. Sure enough he showed us how to get up it and then we stopped at the top. Tourist busses below looked like matchbox toys and he plunged over the top and made it to the bottom in one piece. Then it was our turn. The first time was an anxious run, but on getting to the bottom you only want to go back and do it again. I was hooked! The tour also took in the tin city, a makeshift fisherman's village which was the background in one of the Mad Max movies, the wreck of the Signa further along the beach. We got back as the sun was setting after a really great time. Would do it again in a heartbeat - despite still getting sand from out of nooks and crannies of the Jeep for days afterwards. If wishing to do this not as part of a tour, you must get a special dunes access licence. These are available in many places locally.

Another must see and experience in Port Stephens. the dunes stretches 20km and a number of businesses are run there for 4wd tours, sandboarding tours and more. The beach next to this area is great as well, nice water and great waves. Although, stay between the flags at all times.

Went on 4WD unlimited sand boarding trip with husband & 11 year old daughter...was great fun, however beware you will end up with sand everywhere! Nothing a good shower can't wash away. Definately value for money & loads of fun. Friendly staff, small bottle of water supplied. Go to the loo b4 you go!

We visited Stockton Beach and the surrounding dunes on a windy but sunny day. It is worth a visit. We think they also offer sand dune safaris or something like that but we just walked there a bit. As the dunes are right next to the beach they are quite accessible. We enjoyed the beach a bit more due to the crystal clear waters.

All vehicles driving in WCL must be registered and display a valid beach vehicle permit which can be purchased in Port Stephens from BP Service Station at Anna Bay; BP at Salt Ash; Metro at Williamtown; Port Stephens Visitor Centre in Nelson Bay and National Parks & Wildlife office in Nelson Bay.
Tours are available as is recreational 4WD. Also Horseback rides. I have not camped on the beach, recommend visiting Worimi National Park NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services website for more detailed information. This is a beautiful spot and well worth the trip. Hope this helps
