Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The museum and Coral Cafe are in the same building and is situated on Lagoon Road halfway between Lagoon Beach and town shops. Free to enter and great to get info and maps etc and have a coffee and simple food whilst there (you pay for this). Good value and excellent coffee.

When we visited the museum, it was open 10am-2pm, with cafe open at 9am. Two areas, one the history of settlement on the island, the other more environment and wildlife. Both very informative. A variety of displays and well done story panels. Depending on your interests, probably 1-2 hours needed. Entry by donation.

There is so much packed into this amazing place, including a small restaurant with beautiful food. They have so many exhibits showing a history of the island and the creatures that once inhabited it and are sadly no longer in existence. They have many interesting books and DVD's to purchase. They stock souvenirs and island related clothing. The staff are friendly and helpful. This place is a hub of activity and for good reason.

This is an excellent little museum, largely put together and staffed by locals, usually on a voluntary basis. It is very small and is divided into two sections, each of one room: one covering the human history of LHI and the other natural history, back to its fiery volcanic origins 7 million years ago. All very interesting and not at all overwhelming - as so many museums can be.
Visited here twice. (The adjoining Coral Cafe is also an excellent lunch venue!) Both times chatted with the local museum volunteers who were very friendly and only too happy to answer all sorts of questions about life on LHI. . They also sell reasonably priced local souvenirs - mostly made in China (one exception being the very tasty local LHI honey). Entry is free but donations gratefully accepted.

I love museums, maybe *especially* regional ones, so perhaps I'm kinda biased.. LHI Museum is great for more than just coffee and wifi(really, leave the wifi behind..it's an Island, enjoy a REAL holiday and Switch OFF..)... the coffee is good though! The museum is organised well, splitting “environment” and “history” up into their own exhibits, with a tidy little military history between them, just by the souvenirs..with the tiny population and it's position in the Pacific, it's not hard to fathom WW2 must have been absolutely brutal for the locals. You can swan through it all in an hour, or have a bit of nerd fun and actually read the stories. Also, for souvenirs, it's pretty hard to go past their canvas bags, bargains and easy to pack! I'm sorry I missed out on getting to one of their movie showings, they sounded pretty groovy. The Visitor Centre is also in there, in disguise, looking more like the museum entry/help desk. It was only when the kind man at the desk asked if I needed any help and he explained the phone was free for booking tours etc that I realised that's the Visitor Centre.. all in all, a neat little corner in LHI, very useful if you need to spend a day in the shade or out of rain... with the Coral Cafe as well, which is pretty much the museum's balcony!

The Lord Howe Island museum is full of informative information going back to 1778 when the island was discovered by HMS Supply of the first fleet. It holds archives, records and interesting photographs of Lord Howe history of the settlement since 1834.
The museum also has the tourist information centre located in the foyer. It’s open between 9am - 3pm Monday till Friday and 9am - 2pm on Sunday.
The Coral Cafe which is also located inside serves excellent food, drinks and coffee. Internet is available for a fee.

Although small, this museum gives you a bit of an insite into the people of Lord Howe and how much they value what they have. From the extensive eradication of feral species from the island, to the recovery programs they have put in place for their remaining endemics. It's all worth a look. The historical information about the early settlers, and the Catalinas is also very interesting.

There are only two rooms: one about the history and one about nature, but count on a full hour to process through the exhibits.
Entry free, but donations welcome.
Only open from 9-3 pm, but there are two talks a week about birds and the coral reef around Lord Howe. Presenter is informative and his photos are good but his flat affect can make it challenging up stay awake at times. Talks usually start a bit later than planned and so run over the allotted hour. Take this into account when making your dinner restaurant bookings. Charge $6 per adult.
Very friendly tourist info office inside.
Coral Cafe inside is also great. See separate review.

Completely unexpected! For a sleepy island the museum was next level. Sooo much information, great displays and helpful friendly staff and volunteers. Do not miss visiting this gem and you can enjoy lunch or a coffee in the adjacent cafe. Also had internet yay!

The museum is well designed and next the Island Information centre and Coral Café. It covers quite a lot on the history of the island, its world heritage status and natural features.
There are souvenirs available too and the ability to talk to locals.
