Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

About a 2 hour boat ride to the rock which is 20km from the shore. Not suitable to visit if bad or very windy weather as waves can be 2-3 metres high. Turtles, dolphins and sea birds to see on the way. A must to visit if nothing else.

Its like something out of fantasy movie. As you get closer the excitement builds and then the size, steer cliffs, history delivers. Loved snorkelling around the base.
If the weather allows I recommend a trip to balls pyramid with Reef n beyond.

Took what turned out to be the last Reef n Beyond trip out to the Pyramid and around LHI.
The water was pretty choppy but only 1 person (afaik) lost their breakfast.
The trip past Mt Gower and Balls Pyramid is awe inspiring as they rise 800 and 500m respectively straight out of the ocean.
There were plenty of sea birds to look at and the return trip up the east and north coast of LHI was really pretty too.
Dave gave a good commentary and we felt very safe in his hands.
Not as keen on Glenys who took our booking. Quite snippy, but maybe she was just looking forward to their holiday.

Visible from the many hill top vantage points, at 23km from the main island, can only get up close by snorkel or dive boat tour or small plane sightseeing. Worth doing one of these. Is a stunning piece of rock rising some 500m. No longer allowed to set foot on, which would be quite challenging anyway.

What a wonderful trip with Dave and Stefan from Reef & Beyond. Not only informative but got to circumnavigate Lord Howe, Balls Pyramid as well as Admiralty Rocks. Good boat complete with toilet (a necessary plus), great tourist information on history, geology and wildlife. Visit from a pod of Bottle Nosed Dolphins added to the adventure as well as some great deep sea snorkeling.

If you're not into watching seabirds, don't worry. Ball's Pyramid is one of the most staggering natural rock formations I've seen anywhere on earth. It's a 562m blade thrusting out of the ocean, the tallest volcanic stack in the world. It looks like some computer-generated dragon roost from Game of Thrones, but it is very real, with a fascinating history that our skipper Jack Shick related whilst we watched dolphins cavorting around us and I picked up species after species of new seabird. You are very much at the mercy of the weather, of course, so if you are prone to sea-sickness, choose your day carefully. Naturally there are many last-minute cancellations but you don't want to be out there in bad weather. We were lucky, despite a beam wind that made for a bumpy ride. A real highlight of Lord Howe Island.

It was fascinating seeing Lord Howe Island from the sea-ward side – it does look quite different. Ball’s Pyramid is 23 km away so it involves 25-30min of full-on seasickness-inducing speedboating. Josh and Dave from Reef N Beyond provide excellent commentary and information about history and nature. It is definitely worth doing this tour to see a different aspect of LHI. You will see wildlife of various kinds along the way – dolphins, lots of sea birds and flying fish. There is a snorkelling option at Ball’s Pyramid where our group saw a turtle. Stephan is a professional photographer that takes photos from the boat and underwater during the snorkel, and you can view them the next day. You don’t need to pre-purchase the photo package when you book the tour as you can still purchase after you have seen what’s on offer.
I am severely prone to seasickness but I took Kwells tablets beforehand and it worked for me and I enjoyed the tour. There are seasick bags provided for every seat but take some Kwells and you hopefully won’t need the bags.

Did a tour to Balls pyramid and did some snorkelling. It is a strange place, stuck in the middle of the ocean. Well worth a visit.

Climb the steep track from near the airport, about 60 minutes if you’re in your 70s & fit, for a spectacular view of the Island plus Balls Pyramid. No point on an overcast day, wait for clear skies to maximise your view. The steep track down proved hazardous as we encountered slippery tree roots after a sudden down pour. Take Walking poles if you need them & hang on to the palm trunks. Worthwhile. We had lunch on the platform at the top.

By walking along the track to the calm place you will be able to see Balls Pyramid. The track also goes to the Valley of Shadows which is quite nice. This is one of the islands easier walks.
