- Roadtripping NannyNewcastle, Australia586 contributionsVery helpfulThe staff here were lovely and friendly and very knowledgeable about LR. We were able to get all the brochures and maps we needed…..at no charge….and they answered all our questions about tours, car door tours and where to grab a nice meal. Tourist Information Centres are worth their weight in gold……or opals.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 March 2024
- Kaz G5 contributionsVery HelpfulWent twice, very friendly staff. Spend $1 on the car door tours map on arrival ( I did not know about this) and ask for the Orange door tour map which is well worth the drive out of town. Just don't do what I did and mistake it as the yellow door tour on local map they give you as it is not on this map and we thought the locals were playing a joke on us tourist as nothing was lining up :-).Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 4 May 2024
- Ian SLondon, United Kingdom719 contributionsOut thereThe train/bus trip from Central Sydney was lovely. If you're looking for canyons and snow capped mountains, you're heading for the wrong place. If it's quirky you're after, then the Ridge has it in abundance. Stunning art at John Murray's gallery, an amazing sculpture work underground in one of the mines, a large cactus garden and tours of the mines. In addition, if you're into wildlife, there's a lot out here as well. Most choose not to see it. Good meals can be had at the club and one or two restaurants and, if you want to purchase something, don't overlook the Sunday markets.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 22 September 2024

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A quick stop at the Visitor Information Centre revealed little gems of information. The centre is operated by volunteers who are passionate about their little slice of paradise. I recommend the coloured door tour; cost $1 for the map & well worth the expense as it takes you on the the sights of Lightning Ridge & shows you the working & living life of an opal miner. Be prepared for some off road driving, but well worth the time. Takes approximately 4-6 hours depending if and on how long you visit the major attractions.

The lady we spoke to here was very helpful and went out of her way to make sure we understood the information she was giving us. We came away with enough to keep us busy for the time we were staying in Lightning Ridge. We had a brochure on the coloured Door Tours and the best times to go and a list of attractions in town which told you where they were, what to expect and the cost of entry. I had to return to the centre on Tuesday to have some documents copied and once again they were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble.

Woman was very passionate about what we could do and very informative. The visitor stats were not updated and the place itself could do with a bit of jazzing up to make it more interesting. Car door tours the best thing going here but have to make a $1 donation- where does the money go?

We were very happy with Tommy Lee & her knowledge & recommendations of things to see & do here in the Ridge. Her genuine smile, friendliness & happy to assist us & many others arriving on a busy Sunday are a real credit to the info centre. Sunday market in the car park & a wonderful sausage sizzle also available.

On first impressions, the centre lacked much of what you would expect with very few brochures in stock on the shelves. I'm glad I approacjed the desk and found wonderful young lady who went to great lengths to offer info and explain so much about the area. She even convinced us to drive to an outlying mining area and we loved the "Three Pubs in the Scrub".

A great place to start your journey to Lighting Ridge. Helpful and informative staff who can tell you about the car door tours and other highlights. A small amount of souvenirs available (it is Lightning Ridge after all) and also an opportunity to fossick in the pile of rocks outside. You should stop here on your way into town.

The tourist info had plenty of written information prepared months in advance. What it was lacking was up to date local info. What is the condition of the road on the red door route - no idea. What is the weather forecast for today - no idea. Can you drive on the unmade roads in the wet - no idea. Could do better.

Visitor Information Centres are our first stop and go-to for the best information on an area and Lightning Ridge Visitor Centre is one of the best we've visited.
Sue was the funniest, friendliest lady with not only bags of personality but also a wealth of information on Lightning Ridge - she was absolutely amazing.
We had an awesome time in Lightning Ridge and fell more in love with the place each day.
Outside, make sure you pop your faces through the cartoon mining couple photo board for a fun pic.
Lovely gift shop too.

Start your visit to Lightning Ridge here. Pick up your map of the town and your map of the car door tours. Receive the advice that you need to book the chamber of the black hand tour and heed this.

Lovely volunteers who are eager to ensure you have a great time in Lighting Ridge. A fossicking pit close by to try your luck finding opal - apparently some luck lad got a $10,000 piece of opal from this very spot. The castings are changed every 2 days so go and have a fossick - Good Luck!!
