About
We provide an outdoor stargazing experience through telescopes at Milroy Observatory. Milroy Observatory is a dark sky site bordering on the Warrumbungle Dark Sky Park 10 km from Coonabarabran and town likes. Here you can enjoy amazing views of the Southern night sky. We operate night sky tours on all clear nights. Bookings are essential. The show starts with a tour of the evening sky with Donna the Astronomer, or her team, then a number of bright and deep sky objects are observed with our outdoor telescopes and binoculars. See planets, galaxies, nebulas and star clusters, and other fantastic night sky wonders. Our friendly, easy-going style ensures the group has fun and learn more about the wonders of the night sky. There are only 2 rules - have fun and ask questions! We are family and pet friendly and work to ensure everyone has a good time. The show is hands-on, and you look at lots of exciting objects through the telescope. We also include indigenous sky stories

See it with your own eyes!
After seeing the professional telescopes at Siding Springs (in the daytime), or visiting the Warrumbungles National Park, a visit to Milroy Observatory is highly recommended. Donna is a knowledgeable guide to the heavens, and you get to look through a real telescope (something that professional astronomers don't do, these days). Milroy Observatory is about 15 minutes from Coonabarabran, in Australia's Dark Sky park - well worth the trip. Hint: On iPhone, enter "Milroy Observatory" into Apple Maps, and it will take you straight there!
So glad you enjoyed. Thanks for the tip re Apple Maps! Thanks for the wonderful review

    Unforgettable time stargazing
It was fantastic Donna was amazing we had such a great night. Our Kids 4 and 7 got to listen to stories and facts about space which they talked for days after about it. Donna had so much patience with them, we were there with another family so there was four young kids she knew exactly how to keep them interested.
So glad you and your children enjoyed and I love it when we have a few kids because they ask the most amazing questions and I get to talk about stuff grown ups want to know but aren’t brave enough to ask!

Last night I saw a 12 billion year old galaxy, and it was beautiful.
I have been talking about taking my family to the warrumbungles for years to stargaze and see the nights sky teeming with shooting stars… we seen shooting stars and so much more. I was concerned being school holidays and crowded that it might diminish the experience. No chance, Donna and her team managed the big group really well, so much to see and learn, so many amazing stories, no rush and everyone had as much time as they needed before we moved on.. This week I saw what was left of a 12 billion year old galaxy, the oldest in our universe, and it was truely beautiful. Thank you Donna and team, I can’t wait to do it again soon (FYI to any readers Darcy my daughter seen 8 shooting stars in 90 mins)
Hi Brian Glad everyone enjoyed and good on Darcy for looking up seeing many meteors

Seeing the stars in a whole new light
Donna provides a wonderful evening. Fantastic commentary on the workings of the stars, and how they were viewed by indigenous cultures. All attendees get to view the stars Donna talks about through telescopes, and its very interactive. Great for kids, and big old kids alike. Blankets are provided for keeping warm under a stunning southern sky. The sky will really blow you away
Thanks Jodie Glad you enjoyed - I did warn everyone that I talk too much!

Great night sky activity including the whole family
We really enjoyed this tour of the night sky. Sadly Donna was still unwell however her just as qualified husband did a fantastic job in her place. I thought I had seen the sky all my life, then when they switched off the lights to start I finally actually SAW the sky. It was amazing out there. With a full group it still felt intimate and everyone had a chance to see everything that was shown through the telescopes. They had great patience with the small children and my autistic son. They supplied blankets which was a lovely extra especially at this family left their beanies and gloves back at our motel room 😂 If you are passing by Coonabarabran I recommend taking a stop there overnight and going to her observatory.
Thank you so much for review and glad you enjoyed

Passionate host and not to be missed experience
No photos, for obvious reasons, but very very impressed with Donna the Astronomer's introduction to the universe. Awesome viewing through the telescope and accompanying stories and facts. Donna brought everything to life. Would not recommend for small children, but everyone else will love this. It's outdoors so bring warm clothes if visiting in cooler months. About 10 minutes from Coonabarabran. Book in advance.
Thanks for kind words and amazing review. So glad you enjoyed the experience

    A wonderful family night
We came as a family last night. The show was phenomenal. The two girls running the show in Donna’s absence were very informative and knowledgeable. We saw lots of amazing sights and features, all of which were wondrous. However, I’d say our favourite were the views of the moon and Saturn, which were breath-taking.
Hi Georgie - I am so glad you enjoyed - Jess and Tahni are a great team! I will pass your comments on. Thanks for taking time to leave a re owe and please tell you friends as well!

    Very supportive and passionate staff
It's a very lovely and welcoming experience. We went in a school holiday and there are so many visitors. The booking system is easy and staff are flexible and friendly. Travelling to the place is easy with signs go aIong the way. We could not see the milky way because we went on a full moon night but staff showed us objects they could find from the sky.
So glad you enjoyed the experience - unfortunately school holidays seem to coincide with full moon!

    ‘Blown away’ experience!
We are locals so often do Donna’s tour when we have visitors. This time no exception. 1 visitor from Carolina US and 1 from Swansea NSW. The night was perfect. Moon in first quarter and a clear night…Even though the large telescope is not yet functioning, the smaller telescopes provided wonderful viewing. Our guests were ‘blown away’ with the presentation and with the night!

The best stargazing tour who can imagine. Coonabarabran is the stargazing capital of Australia and Donna and her team are so knowledgeable and delivering above expectations. No question is too stupid or too complex. Great family friendly environment.

This is our first Stargazing experience for a group of 2 families. It was mind-blowing and we were awestruck seeing the Giant Orion Nebula, Field of baby diamonds, Magellan clouds, so many satellites, Jupiter, seeing a light that is 200,000 years old etc. Donn's team answered all our questions and presented with enough explanation even kids could understand. We would definitely recommend Donna's in Coonabarabran and you wont be disappointed if you are a first time Stargazer.

We were told that Donna was very knowledgeable and were a bit disappointed we didn’t get Donna as a presenter. It would be handy to have a sign to enter the gate, we sat at the gate for 10 minutes not knowing that we could enter.

An enjoyable and informative tour of the clear Coonabarabran night sky, focusing on a range of celestial objects and culminating in the highlight for us of seeing the rings of Saturn.

Had lots of potential. Regrettably the 'Donna' was not well, so we had 2 other ladies - both knowledgeable but not as much as we understand Donna is.
We had a night with no cloud and 1/4 moon, but moonlight still dominated the
sky. If you go, pick a 'no moon' time.
Fascinating seeing moon, Saturn up close - sadly big telescope in for repairs.
We initially only had 5 people which meant not a lot of time just sitting around, but then 5 more joined late, and this made it very slow.
Almost felt like they ran out of things for us to see.

Apologies for my absence but I have been in and out of hospital and Jess and Tahni do a great job given they both have only been with me for less than a year. Thanks for taking the time to give feedback and that you enjoyed the Moon and Saturn. Your comment on the Moon is a valid one. Again thanks for the feedback and I do try to be there as often as I can.
