It's a huge working open cut gold mine. View the Chesney mine poppet head. There is a "mine " of information to read up on the lookout platform. Very interesting even for the kids up there. We viewed huge trucks and loaders at work. There...More

Having driven through Cobar many times I often wondered what the lookout was offering. Its about 5 mins drive of the highway and what a disappointment. Theres been no effort seemingly to keep the facility maintained as the surrounds are overgrown and run down.

Pleasantly surprised to see to an open cut mine. I went looking for a fort Fort Bourke and found something completely different. Don't be surprised about some things.

Was worth going to - very deep mine. Interesting information at lookout and good view over countryside.

It was late afternoon and we were looking into the sun - our fault. It was blowing a gale - no one's fault. In the end, the view was limited to moving about to find vantage points. The main feature was a huge open cut...More

Great spot to check out how open cut mines work and view the history of the old shafts visible from the cut.

Our group of travellers were all "blown away" by the view we had of a working mine. The information at the lookout was really great, gave a really good perspective of the size of the operation we were watching. Well worth a look.

Absolutely amazing standing on the observation platform overlooking this huge open cut mine. I was advised the bottom of the open cut is 150 metres below the surface and the underground mine is then 600 metres below the bottom of the open cut. This was...More

Good view of the open cut mine. Looks really impressive. But don't expect any more than that it's just a lookout, nothing more nothing less.

This is worth the while to have a look. Was not expecting something so deep. We also drove out to the mine owned by the same company 8 km out on the Hillston Rd but the visitors car park gates were shut.

Hi, I wanted to confirm if you can just drive up to the lookout and viewing platform and see the mine. I'm a little confused as on the tourism NSW website, it states that access to the viewing platform is limited and ring to the Cobar Cultural Centre. Thanks, Chantal

Yes you can drive up to the lookout on a sealed (tar) road. You need to walk about the last 30 metres. There is a covered shelter there but no seats.
