On my long road trip down from Brisbane to Sydney I had promised myself at least one night in Byron Bay. I arrived at my motel late one afternoon recently and was pleased that I could park for free in the motel car park. I then went into town for a bite to eat and sample the atmosphere.
To be honest, I was disappointed. There were a lot of bars and restaurants but they were all very crowded and quite loud, particularly the ones with live music. Those on the street were also quite loud, noticeably the groups of youngsters and other more rough, elderly gentlemen looking the worse for wear (alcohol or worse?). And when checking out some of the menus at the restaurants I fancied I saw that the prices were spectacular.
But, the next day I got up at the crack of dawn and explored the beach and coastal path up to the Byron Bay lighthouse. Now that was superb. Having little human contact seemed to be the trick. And of course you can't beat the views of the coastline and the magnificent Pacific Ocean. Wonderful. Hence my rating here...

Almost every Australian who talks about Byron starts by saying in a wistful tone, ’It’s not what it used to be’ and then goes on to lament that the once bohemian surfers’ paradise has been ruined by tourism and commercialisation.
Certainly it's a tourist mecca these days but it’s also a lively, fun, and stunningly beautiful part of the NSW coastline.
The beaches all have rolling waves and long stretches of golden sand. We alternated between Main Beach, Clarkes Beach and Wategos but our favourite was The Pass.
The thing that really ‘made’ our trip was staying right on the beach.
Byron Bay Beachfront Apartments were directly opposite Main beach so we walked nearly everywhere and hardly moved our car during our stay.
Car parking and congestion on the main road are two of the big frustrations for many visitors to Byron so if you can avoid this by booking centrally located accommodation then it will make all the difference.
The village centre was also just a couple of minutes walk away. It’s crowded for sure but it also offers lots of shops, boutiques, cafes, street entertainers, bars, and upmarket restaurants.
Japonaise Kitchen was our favourite for a casual meal.
Byron Bay is mostly all about the beaches but if you need a change of pace, there are a lot of other things to do.
One afternoon we decided to do a bit of exploring so we walked the Byron Bay History Walking Trail (see separate review).
On the weekend, we went to the very popular Community Markets which are held on Sunday mornings.
The best non-beach thing we did was visiting The Farm. Kids loved feeding the sheep, chickens and pigs and we loved relaxing at the cafe-restaurant.

I love Byron Bay. Restaurants are ace abd customer service that I've experienced have been excellent.
DI Vino and Bang Bang are both excellent restaurants with highly personalised service.
Regards accommodation I stayed at a lovely hidden gem called Casa Piera just behind the city center in a quiet street. The host Emily would make you feel totally at home and the decor of this little side apartment attached to their large gorgeous home is pretty special. There's also a friendly Cafe right next door. Try it out you'll love it!

We came here for a wedding and whilst walking around the streets looking for a restaurant we were verbally abused on three separate occasions by three separate groups of men for being gay. They are so retro in this town that even the word ‘poofter’ is still used liberally. My partner and me are in our 60’s and were so threatened by this that we returned to the safety of our hotel without dinner. This town is dangerous for gay people - stay away and spend your pink dollars somewhere else.

I remember visiting in 2012 for the first time and thinking that Byron Bay was overrated and a little dirty. We have just returned from a three day trip and really enjoyed the beach walks and the lighthouse trek. I really good afternoon listening to music in a beach front bar and a great lunch in the Manna Haven vegan cafe. Apart from these highlights the place is a mess, dirty, badly maintained roads and footpaths. The place smells and the interaction with pedestrians and vehicles is just dangerous. Fortunately we walked everywhere and did not have to pay $4 and $5 an hour for parking; we wondered where this revenue was being spent; certainly not on the public areas. Many of our friends visiting wish to visit Byron but we cannot recommend it. It is an iconic location and it should be treated and maintained accordingly.

Can't take dogs basically anywhere. Drive up to the lighthouse only to be told we can't even leave the dog in the car to step out and take a picture. Also council won't let you even fart in this place without paying for parking. Minimum charge is 18 minutes just to pull up and run into a shop. Not very inviting for tourists!

I love Byron so much. It’s getting quite commercial now and the prices are up there, but I definitely love the vibe and how everything is centrally located , so I recommend getting accomodation near by so you don’t really need to touch the car unless you’re driving to surf spots. I would avoid going during schoolies and school holidays to avoid the chaos .

Unfortunately the weather was not amazing during our 5 night stay in Byron. However, there are so many lovely restaurants, it was relatively easy to relax inside over and drink or some food. On the days that the weather was good, the beaches are glorious. The are a few beaches within walking of the town, Wategos beach was our favourite.
In the evenings there is lots of live music in the bars, restaurants and on the streets. We spent a few evenings watching live music on the green.
Byron can be an expensive trip but it is also easy to save money, there are lots of lovely spots with a view to take a picnic or takeaway food to.
We even saw dolphins in the bay on several occasions.

Byron Bay is the apparent ending point for NSW residents going north and Queensland residents going south. And they all seem to have arrived at once!! It was so busy in October, outside school holidays. Restaurants booked out, streets filled with people, beaches and parks crowded - all with no social distancing or masks. Shops dominated by the 'organic and vegan' brand - even saw a stall selling 'organic and vegan GLITTER'???? It is a pretty spot but don't expect to 'get away from it all' here. There are plenty of nearby options along the coast that are not resting on the laurels of a certain reputation.

Wonderful 3 night stay in Byron Bay. The beach/water front area is absolutely georgous. We went here in June, which is winter in Australia, and stayed at QuickSilver apt with a wonderful sea view from the balcony and in the small city center. We also had a great hike to the old lighthouse on a cliff at the end of the beach. Realiced this is a hippie center (as one who grew up in the 60ties I thought they dissapeared 50 years ago, but no!) Most shops were selling hippie style clothes and there are a lot of yoga retreats here. We might come back!

What is the last time that any of the snorkel tours go out? Reason being I fly into Brisbane at 2:00 and won't get there until 5:00 pm. I am not sure when it gets dark during winter season and how late any of the snorkel boats leave at the late afternoon? Can you let me know? Even private companies? Thanks
