I guess that I was still suffering from jet lag coming from Europe, but I was recently staying in Byron Bay and decided to get up at 5:30 on a weekday morning and start on the long coastal walk to the Byron Bay lighthouse. What an excellent idea. It was a lovely sunny morning with beautiful blue skies. Not too hot, with fantastic views over the Pacific Ocean. It was probably too late in the season as I didn't spot any migrating whales or dolphins but that didn't deter from an absolutely wonderful morning. Oh, and on the way you have a lookout which is placed at the most easterly point of Mainland Australia. So quite a significant landmark and one to add to my bucket list.

I was intrigued to see how many crazy people were also up at this ungodly hour. There were many wet suited surfers out in the various bays I passed. And there were many joggers and quite a few hardy walkers like me. What I found curious was the unwillingness of most people to say "Hello" or "G'Day" as we passed each other. Most seemed to be in worlds of their own and the thought of civil greetings seemed to be foreign to them. Some even appeared shocked, annoyed or even scared???

Anyway I thoroughly enjoyed this lovely walk and got back to the town ca. 3 hours later for a well earned coffee and some breakfast.

The trails to the lighthouse and return are in excellent condition. There are places along the way for rests. Signs are well placed with interesting information. We were lucky to have seen dolphins. You do need a good level of fitness or else park your car up top (cost of approx $8- for an hour) to take advantage of the views and to see the lighthouse.

I walked the full circuit of the lighthouse track from Byron Bay town centre in around 2 1/2 hours during the cool of the morning. The first section from the surf club was along the beach, then along the rear of the beach, as Clarke’s Beach had almost disappeared at high tide. I then turned uphill from Captain Cook’s lookout, winding through the rainforest as the track gained elevation up a series of stairs. At the top, there were great views to the south as the track followed the ridge tops to the hang glider launch platform near the lighthouse road. Then followed the last section of the lighthouse road to the top along the well paved and separated footpath. The 360 degree views from the lighthouse lookout is worth the walk on its own. I then descended towards the east, down almost to the water, where the well constructed path leads back around the coastline past Wategos Beach and Palm Valley, where you can get a coffee or cold drink from Rae’s. I continued back around the coastline and back into the town centre. All up, a 2 1/2 hour round trip, with plenty of stops to enjoy the sights along the way. I saw some interesting sections of coastal rainforest in the more protected areas, as well as a number of scrub turkeys, including two nesting mounds.
If you are not inclined to walk the full circuit, you can park at various locations on the way (for a fee), even driving right to the lighthouse!

Watched the sunrise at the easterly part then walked up to the light house. The views were awesome & the trials with signs were super easy to follow.
The only downfall was some of the trial was a bit steep so be prepared for your legs to burn.
Definitely something you need to do while in Byron.

This place is very crowded and impossible to find a park within a km. It's a nice walk, not for those who lack fitness though. On the path we saw a lady who had to lie on the path due to exhaustion, we helped her but mainly she just needed something to drink and to rest she said. Lots of tourists not being sun smart and oh boy did they look burned. The parts up the steps (maybe an hour or so of on and off steps) are in the sun. There are some lovely shaded parts up from the other side. The scenery changes as you travel around. I went with my dad who's in his mid 60s but doing ok but he said he was so sore the next day oh no!

The lighthouse rail was amazing. The track is not too hard to walk on. There were steep steps but nothing too difficult for me and my girlfriends. There's no need to wear trainer shoes as one of us only wore thongs. I did still wore trainers as I read other reviews that says you should. If you're just sightseeing and taking pictures then no need ot wear trainers. If you're climbing up here to have a bit of a jog/cardio then by all means wear shoes.
The weather was a bit rainy when we got there which made it interesting. It's exhilirating to see water pouring down from afar. If you're visiting Byron Bay, this is a must-see.

It you want to get a glorious view of the beaches and surroundings of Byron’s Bay, this 1-2 hour trail is for you. Only strenuous in a few areas. People were running on the trail and many folks of all ages were hiking. Plenty of benches along the way if you want to rest. It’s a loop; you can’t get lost.

The trail has an obvious trailhead at a parking lot. If you start at the town center, you can walk the entire length of the beach to find the parking lot.

The Cape Byron Walking Track is situated in the Cape Byron State Conservation Area, which is located near the town of Byron Bay in New South Wales, Australia. This scenic walking trail covers a 3.7 km loop and meanders through some of the most picturesque landscapes in the area.

The trail commences at the easternmost point of mainland Australia, Wategos Beach, and provides visitors with sweeping views of the surrounding coastline. The path then ascends towards the headland, revealing breathtaking vistas of the lush rainforest, rocky cliffs, and the vast ocean. During the walk, visitors may also spot various types of wildlife, such as dolphins, whales, and sea turtles.

The Cape Byron Walking Track is well-maintained and is suitable for walkers of all levels. It typically takes around 2 hours to complete the trail, but visitors are encouraged to take their time to appreciate the views and wildlife. When planning a visit, it's important to bring essential items such as water, sunscreen, and comfortable footwear.

Lovely walk but not so very easy. It looks like a breeze from Byron Bay but it was further than we expected and the path ran up and down dome fairly steep hills on the way. Much easier to come back via the road but nothing like the same beautiful views. We did see some dolphins down below the lighthouse

Wonderful place to visit. Markets on Thursday and Saturday. Many creative and talented people making all sorts of craft's and healthy tonics to buy. A swim in the clear blue waters 💧. Magical experience.
