Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My husband gave me a ride in a balloon for our anniversary last week. Our ride started at the Channon Showgrounds and we landed on a farm in Eltham. The views were spectacular. Our pilot was extremely obliging and the support crew were all passionate about the region!!! Highly recommended!!!

Truly an experience! The approximately 70-minute balloon ride took us over beautiful rolling hills, initially in the romantic morning mist. The small team is really extraordinarily friendly and incredibly committed. The breakfast at 3 Blue Ducks (The Farm) is first class.
A must-do in Byron Bay.

Amazing moment for our first ballooning experience! Thank you guys for your kindness and professionalism! Even though the weather was not good, Tomas our pilot gave us plenty of information about our flight.
The pickup was right on time even if our location was not on the list on the website. The breakfast and glass of champagne were lovely!

To fly in a hot air balloon was my dream, and we decided to go for it after reading the reviews here in Tripadvisor. On the good side, I can say they gave us a little discount, which was nice, but it was still very expensive. And didn't worth it. Why?
1. They didn't tell us to dress warm. We did it anyway, with heavy shoes and coats, since it was July. But the 30 minutes of preparation were in a field heavily covered with frost, so after 10 minutes our feet were frozen to the bones. They kept being frozen through almost the entire flight, so I couldn't really enjoy it. I would expect, after paying 300$ each, that they would have a solution for this problem.
2. The guys that run this thing don't really communicate. They just give you the safety instructions, and then forget about you and talk mainly among themselves. We were about 12 people in the same flight, they could at least try to have a conversation, to get us to introduce ourselves, to let us feel like a group of people that are having the same exciting experience together, but they didn't, and they didn't give us any explanation or information about the flight or the views, so it felt just like it was: A group of strangers stuck together in the same basket.
3. You may say that the reason for not talking to us would be that they wanted to let us experience it and enjoy the views silently, but it wasn't silence, because they let two of their trainees to join the flight (which was already realy packed with guests), and the pilot spent the entire flight teaching them and explaining them stuff. Excuse me?? Do it on your own time, not when it's my money and my experience!
4. People said here that they flew above the sea. We didn't even see the sea. People tell us here that they landed somewhere in the countryside area and had breakfast in the middle of the field. We didn't. They picked us up after landing, and drove us (silently and dully, again) back to their office, where we had a simple-non-spacial breakfast.
In short: It felt like they're doing it only for the money, or as a side job. I could tell they are so bored doing it, because they made it so boring for me. I can definitely say that they completely ruined my dream.

My name is Thomas Dattler, owner and chief pilot of Byron Bay Ballooning. I would like to clarify a few points from this review and hope you take the time to read it.
1. We clearly state on our website "On the day" to dress according to conditions and wonder what galulon expects us to do about this - passengers are welcome to assist with the inflation and take pictures - most do - however if it was too cold he could have waited in the vehicles if he wanted to. Yes ballooning is and always will be an adventure, and this includes sometimes wet paddocks, cold mornings and routes that are dictated by the wind. We do not have a steering wheel and therefore at times have to drive for a while for the most appropriate safe launch site. We try to keep flights as close to the coast as possible - as current Australian ballooning champion I ensure this is done and except for very rare days always have stunning views of the coastline.
2. I am not sure what pilot flew that day - most of the times we are more than happy to share information with the passengers if possible, however on some flights conditions are difficult and we need to concentrate more on the actual flight, wind directions, possible landing areas etc to provide a safe flight which is the priority. Considering the description of the flight path it would have been inland so often they require more attention.
3. At times, according to Civil Aviation rules, we are required to conduct check flights with our or other pilots - these need to be done in a normal operation environment - thus cannot be done on a private flight. This is to ensure safe standards in all commercial operations. As of today - we are accident and incident free and are proud of it.
4.We NEVER state that we fly over the sea, in fact, it is forbidden so this is simply incorrect.
I don't know who the "people" are that tell them about breakfast in landing areas - but considering we usually land in private properties with permission from the owners - and never know exactly beforehand where this will be due to the nature of this area it is simply unreasonable to expect this. Apart from this we state clearly on our website where the breakfast will be and say so before the flight. As for the breakfast, we have fresh quiches, fruit salad, yoghurts, toast muffins or similar, french champagne or lately also organic champagne from a victorian winery "Organic One" as well as tea and coffee and I am sorry it was not to your expectation.
I hope this clarifies some of the comments made
with kind regards,
Thomas Dattler

So we read the reviews here, and decided this was going to be one of our highlights also... and I'm sure it would have been if the company had bothered to call us back or emailed us after we made an application on the website.... we'd organised the family we'd come along with to look after our two children at 4am in the morning... if the company had bothered to call us back... we'd sort of planned the week around the possible balloon trip on the Wednesday.... you get the picture.
My advice: avoid disappointment and use the phone and speak to the company directly. They don't seem to respond to the web request form. I'm sure the tour would be excellent but unfortunately I cannot tell for sure. Maybe next year.

Dear guest,
We are truly sorry about the misunderstanding - we implemented the online booking facility late last year and had a few teething problems. However we always ask passengers to call us between 5 and 6 pm the day before if they have not heard from us to confirm weather and meeting time, as this can change up to the last moment.
We hope to fly you soon and you will find we will be in touch promptly
With kind regards
Thomas Dattler, chief pilot

omg, where to start, everything is so well organized and so magical, from the moment I called (I strongly suggest to book directly from them and support the provider), the pickup, the flight, and the opportunities to get involved in inflating and packing. It is an awesome experience. the lift off and landing are so gentle. the floating in the air feeling is just beyond words. and they are very kind to pick me up from my place and drop me back wherever i need to be.
the scenery is wonderful, peaceful and Tom is a very impressive pilot!
they took very nice photos in the air with the Gopro too, and they also did professional photo shoot with the ballon in the air.
Thank you team and I will be back for sure.

It was one of these misty mornings, where you don’t really know what is a dream, what is reality… We left the airfield under a carpet of stars and rose with the sun in this wonderful bubble of hot air. The silent world is not just the kingdom of the Ocean but the one of the sky too. It was time out of time, it was a time for me, to just have the chance to wonder and admire the world we live in... Thomas and his crew are as gracious and delicate as the flight itself. As a kid, I always aspired to be one of this Phileas Fogg and I have now been “Around the Bay in one morning” and that was a priceless dream!

I grew up in the Byron area but seeing it by air is an incredible and completely different experience. Thomas was fantastic and made sure that everyone was comfortable and enjoying themselves. AND breakfast afterwards was generous and provided a large selection. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

We had the most amazing time. Thomas took us on the ride that will never be forgotten. He is an experienced pilot and showed off his skills. Launched from north of Mullumbimby and got the full treatment of what the northern rivers has to offer. Skimming over trees and mountain ranges then soaring into the sky. Grade A++++ awesomeness.....

We were both very nervous but once we saw Thomas and Lui in action, we had complete confidence! Thomas is such a skilled individual and very impressive knowledge and experience and the way he flew the balloon up through the sky was brilliant. The views were unbelievable and so was the calmness of the balloon! The DVD at the end with the pics just topped off a great experience. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Even the 5.45am start was so worth it!!

I'm coming up next Wednesday(8/3/17) with a group. Can you suggest a best spot in the basket? I'm a keen photographer and would like to get some good shots. I was thinking a corner would be best as you'd get more viewing angle but I'm also interested on your thoughts on which side of the basket would be best.
Cheers,
Gus.

Hi Gus, I would suggest a corner position, however you can swap places within your compartment if you like. All of the other answers are very helpful, it appears passengers were paying attention... :-) We will have 4 big balloons flying on Wednesday so there will be plenty of perspectives and angles to take advantage of. See you then.
