About
Did you know that the Back O Bourke Visitor Information & Exhibition Centre is the place of Outback Legends! Barefoot Harry, Captain Starlight, the Camel traders, WWI Prisoners of War, Charles Bean the man behind the Australian War Memorial make up part of the colourful collection of people and their stories. Your 2-day pass will take you on an intriguing journey and don’t forget the words of a once famous resident of Bourke, Henry Lawson, and 'If you know Bourke, you know Australia'. The Back O' Bourke Cafe is also a great place to sit and enjoy a delicious coffee and a bite to eat whilst enjoying the view of the beautiful Exhibition Centre gardens.

- Roadtripping NannyNewcastle, Australia586 contributionsSo much to see and experienceThis was so good ! As well as a helpful Tourist Information Centre, there is a cafe and toilets and some gifts and merchandise to purchase, and the car parking area is under cover. Yay. The Back O Bourke Exhibition is brilliant. Lots to see and read about, a video and with the use of earbuds given to you, you can hear about lots of wonderful pioneers in the area. You keep walking through the exhibition, learning as you go.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 March 2024
- AVMAustraliaMelbourne, Australia724 contributionsGreat experienceA great time was had talking to the staff member at the visitor’s centre. She had a wealth of local knowledge and an amazing personality. The museum is a bonus to learn some local knowledge, which needs to be paid for. You must purchase one, two or three pairs of the ‘BACK O’ BOURKE’ towels. Sometimes it’s a risk to purchase quality looking souvenirs however these towels are of very high quality and well worth every dollar. Now that we know how good they are (soft, comforting and absorbent), we should have bought three pairs. Apart from that there is a wealth of knowledge to be found at the Bourke Visitors Centre. Make it your first stop before traversing the local or greater area.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 June 2024
- Dave FGeelong & Bellarine, Australia58 contributionsBack O’ Bourke ExhibitionSometimes you arrive at a destination and you have an idea of what it is going to look like. I came here 6 years ago so I knew what to expect. No way. The staff that assisted us were absolutely amazing without being over the top. I ended up matching trivia information with her which was great. We were treated as long lost friends, not another paying customer. The display, (once I finally got there), was just as amazing, the attention to detail was incredible. There was a lot of information that I had already been subjected to yet, the way this was presented was very interesting and NEW. Well done to the entire team however, I truly hope that management appreciates the quality of the staff🤔Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 August 2024

The guide book with explanations and stories about the works was such a good idea. Loved the art works.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 August 2024

This was not really on my list of things to see and do, but we had some free time so decided to have a look. Now we visited during covid times so not sure if much has changed, the entry fee I found to be a bit pricey considering that some of the exhibitions were not working due to covid, maybe the price should have been adjusted.
There was a very informative video as you entered the museum, but after that I found there was alot of reading (and not a great fan of reading big chunks of information I did not enjoy that) so I did skip a few things.
There were some interesting exhibits such as on the Jandra and Henry Lawson.
The cafe was not open

I can recommend the information centre at Bourke. They are a wealth of information and the staff are very helpful. The cafe is very reasonably priced and cater for those who are gluten intolerant.
There's plenty of parking and also lots of interesting sculptures to wander around.

We came to Bourke really just to see this place and we were not let down! So well put together. The ticket price was for 2 days entry and you probably could do it if you wanted to read everything.
Having 2 kids (10,12) they got a bit bored so we didn’t get to spend a huge amount of time there. But glad we did get what we did

We were extremely impressed with the knowledge and helpfulness of the staff. They went well beyond what you normally receive at information centres. The exhibitions attached are very informative and interesting. It costs $21 each to go through the centre but we learnt a great deal about the area. The cafe is excellent but can get very busy so be prepared for a wait. This is where you can buy your Mt Oxley passes and Jandra boat tickets when it is again operating. It’s a good idea to make this centre your first stop when in Bourke.

We arrived in Bourke around 11 am on a Sunday morning. I was hungry and disappointed when I asked for a pie at the cafe and was told there were none left. The lady at the information desk was extremely helpful but when she told me she enjoyed living in Bourke because everything closed down at 12 on a Sunday it left me feeling a bit flat. After when we went in to the town centre and everything was closed it felt like a ghost town. I would have thought that a town that promotes tourism so well could have at least stayed open on a Sunday.

Start your visit here. I had to work to find this place. It’s on the road to Cunumulla but once you do locate it, probably 3 minutes from the town centre, you will find an amazing facility.
Your visit to the exhibition centre starts with a video which was an animation of people and place. After that you go through the first of two halls which have a great deal of information about Bourke and it’s history.
There is a great selection of photographs, written and oral commentaries with a timeline focus.
I think curating exhibitions is always tricky and I did winder why there was such a string focus on Henry Lawson as he spent a short time there. I would have lived a broader focus on the post WW2 period as there wasn’t much on the pastoralists, the introduction and debate around cotton as a crop, the aboriginal community and women in general. The isolation, distances and impact of technology on opening the area up could be an area for a third hall in the future?
Really worth a visit. When we went the Bald Archie’s we’re on which we’re great fun.
The centre is a well thought through concept, very nicely constructed and could be expanded on in future.

Excellent visitor information centre, easily laid out and easy to walk through, so much to read and take in, visually it has a great vibe and was well worth the time spent. We were so fortunate to have Paul Roe take us through and he identified Many points of interest that may have been overlooked. The detail is stunning. Lovely surrounds, with a little cafe providing good food.

This is an excellent exhibition centre and well worth a visit. It gives an insight into life 'out the back of Bourke', people, environment etc. Nice cafe with wifi - so important when travelling , friendly staff.

Called in this morning ready to have morning tea and then view the exhibition. Apparently the cafe is closed Monday and Tuesday. This is amazing for Bourke's major attraction. Is there a sensible explanation for this arrangement?
Thanks goodness the bakery in town has good coffee.

Considering Bourke is a relatively small town I guess they feel as entitled as other people to have a couple of days off.
We visited on the weekend so we were not aware they were closed Monday & Tuesday.
Unfortunately you missed a great display of the history of the area.
Drop in another time, it's well worth the visit.
Sorry you were not able to go. We just loved it.

What are the admission prices and can it be combined with other attractions.

We paid $101 for 2 concessions which gave us entry to the Back 'o Bourke exhibition, the outback show and the paddle steamer ride which leaves from Kidman Camp. I don't know what the individual costs for each activity are. Depends on what interests you. The exhibition is great and you can revisit it with the combined ticket. It's quite extensive. The outback show isn't on every day and was interesting, informative with some humour thrown in. We enjoyed it but it's not a MUST see. The paddle steamer ride is like most others but it was relaxing and informative. Enjoy

9 - 5 pm
cost for the whole family of 4 $78.00
but that included the paddle boat trip for 1 hour.
we went on the boat at 3-4pm then came back and was able to come back the next day to see everything we wanted to see.
its worth it and the Jandra was really amazing
