This is a piece of Australian history which could have disappeared into obscurity except for the efforts of some dedicated people who have preserved the interesting history of this place. German merchant seamen were interned here during WWI, and built sturdy huts where they could pass time in various ways during the day before returning to the Berrima Jail at night. The Germans had famous regattas on the river, observed by the locals. The structures are gone, but there are markers with photographs along the trail. It's easy walking, quiet and scenic.

Very easy walk along the river, it’s very muddy at the moment after all the heavy rain, interesting information along the walk about the German POWs well worth taking the time & having a read.

Easy path in classic bush along the river plus very interesting info about the German POW constructions all along the river. It's pretty muddy after this year's weather but always passable without getting wet. The end is very noisy from the highway so not really a destination to stop at, just go to the end and come back.

A beautiful picnic ground, lake, walk into town, overnight stay for caravaners and historic information boards made this walk a real surprise for me.

The first walk that we did was the Quarry Path Walk which is a separate section of the Berrima River Walk and starts from the car park next to the Berrima Patchwork Quilt shop (on the opposite side of the road to the Magpie Cafe). This walk is less than 800 metres long and can easily be completed within 20 minutes. The Path works its way down to the river, then for a short distance beside it before ascending next to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church. It is a very pretty walk but has a number of stone steps (say approximately 40) that need to be traversed.

The second walk that we did was the main section of the Berrima River Walk. The Information Board at the start of the walk states that it is 1.8klms in length and will take approximately an hour to complete. It took us about 45 minutes and that included time to read the 18 Information Boards along its length. The path is largely flat with one minor hill. The path, which follows the river, is gravel and dirt and was a little muddy in some sections on the day we visited as it had rained overnight and in the morning. The Walk starts from Berrima Reserve which is located at the end of Oxley Street (on the same side of the main road as the Berrima Gaol).

The story around this walk concerns more than 300 German nationals, mostly merchant seamen, who were interned in the Berrima Gaol from 1915 to 1919 as a result of World War I. The interesting part is that the internees were only locked up in the Gaol from 6.30pm until 6.00am. Also, as they were not required to work, they were free to either shop in the village and walk, swim or relax by the river. Many of the internees built bush huts for use during the day and boats to sail on the river. They even built a dam across the river to create a lake upon which they could hold boating regattas which the local townspeople were invited to attend.

Walking alongside the Wingecarribee River today it is hard to imagine that boating regattas were held here but at various stages along the walk there are Information Boards with accompanying photos showing what the bush shacks and regattas looked like.

The path starts from and ends at the Berrima Reserve which has a large parking area as well as a large grassed area and a children's playground and facilities for picnics.

Very interesting and a quite fascinating piece of history.

Great walk for young kids, easy path to follow and lots of animals and birds to see along the way. The kids loved looking for wombat burrows. A small playground and toilets near the car car park.

The riverwalk history is interesting and well worth a stroll if you're in the area. The path itself is relatively level and okay for people with walking issues (I have a torn ACL and it was fine).

A gentle walk about 2km each way along the rather muddy river. The area is covered in rather young regrowth eucalypts and understory tea trees in open forest. The 17 signs note the locations of German internment camp huts, long since disappeared without trace. The track is clear, gritty sand and easy to walk.

Beautiful walk by the river. We took our dog and encountered many other locals along the track with their dogs. Lots of pull off stops to enjoy the river and the scenery. Campsite is great too.

Visited in Sept-2018. This little walk was spectacular! Really great walk for a sunny day, all the colours were beautiful! Managed to spot an Australian water dragon by the river which was fantastic! Very tranquil and peaceful.
