Don’t be fooled by the exterior of the building that houses the Berrima District Museum, the museum itself is well worth the money and extremely interesting to visit.

My family and I recently visited over Christmas and spent a good hour or so wandering round the museum and reading all the signs of information. There is so much to see and read that you could easily spend half a day here. I was fascinated to read about the history, especially of the WWII German internees That were held prisoner here and admire the collection of items from days gone by. There was also another temporary art exhibition inside with works by Rembrandt which was wonderful to see with digital works and audio to listen to the stories.

It is very clean inside and cool during the summer which was a welcome relief to the heat outside. I would definitely visit again when I’m next in the area.

TA lists this attraction against Canberra, but a quick look at Google maps will show you that it is much closer to Sydney than Canberra and in the NSW Southern Highlands.
Berrima has a range of mid 19th C public buildings ( jail, court house, churches) and stone built houses and is now heavily geared to the tourist trade. Wide variety of tourist offerings. Several antique stores, most aimed at furniture but a large one that is mostly aimed at smaller items (some antique, some not). There are a range of nice cafes (wise to book on weekends) and the pie shop seem very popular.
Berkelouw's book barn just outside town on the Mittagong side has a cafe and a wide range of second hand & collectable books. Books are a bit pricey to me, but very interesting.
We like the town a lot and stop there either coming or going on trips to/from Canberra/Sydney.

Really well done museum. There were challenges for the children to complete which made it all the more interesting for them and allowed the parents to read the well set out displays without the kids getting bored.

Dropped in to have a look at this museum and it is worth a visit. Entry is $10.00 per head and is run by volunteers who maintain many artefacts as well as modern interactive presentations.

If you an hour or so to spend whilst in Berrima, why not drop by.

We always check out the local museums in country towns. The museum at Berrima was absolutely outstanding. The amount of detail that they provided about the interaction of the community with WW1 German internees and prisoners of war was fascinating. The history of the cinema in the local area was equally so. The feeling you got of the pride and commitment of the community in the southern highlands to record and remember the achievements of their forebears was something you felt you must share. I certainly will share and recommend it to family and friends

So different from so many country amateur museums which are packed to the rafters with so much that you cannot see most of it and cannot get around in a wheelchair either.
This museum is very professionally organised with interesting displays not too crowded around each other with easy access.
A very interesting display on the German prisoners in Berrima prison, which would be ideal for school groups. Also very useful would be the interactional world War one room.

Well worth the stop and I will stopping by again next time I am in the area.

Berrima in the southern highlands of New South Wales is the perfect example of a distinctly interesting destination, situated around an hour and a half by car from either the Canberra or Sydney CBD. My co-pilot and sous chef, Peter, and I have driven through Moss Vale countless times on our way to and from the Illawarra in the last several years. Every time we've commented on the sign pointing to Berrima, noting that it has been far too long since we last called in to the area. Recently we decided to stop and revisit the beautifully preserved Georgian village, which is said to be the only one of its period in New South Wales.

The town was established in 1831 as the result of the then Surveyor General, Sir Thomas Mitchell, being commissioned to find an easier route from Sydney to Goulburn. One historical reference says the Surveyor General and the then Governor were impressed by its situation in a 'picturesque valley, with a good supply of water from the river and many springs in the area, [as well as] the availability of sandstone for building.'

What was once the 'village green' or 'common' is now the road through the town's centre and both sides of the road are lined with tall trees and rather magnificent buildings, including a row of cottages as well as a gaol (circa 1836, still operational!), a court house (1838), and the Surveyor General Inn (1834, the oldest continually licensed inn in New South Wales). Many of these were built by convict labour and have been beautifully preserved.

We went to see the Remembering 1200 Exhibition but we also looked at the other exhibitions on display. They were all very interesting and well displayed.
