About
Lake Eucumbene in the beautiful Snowy Mountains is located around 40 kilometres from Cooma at its closest point. It sits at an elevation of 1200 metres above sea level making it a pristine alpine lake. The closest town to Lake Eucumbene is Adaminaby. The dam construction was finished in 1958 creating the largest of the Snowy Scheme lakes. It holds around nine times the volume of water that Sydney Harbour does. This lake is one of the best fisheries in the Australian Highlands holding rainbow trout, brown trout and atlantic salmon, the lake is regularly re-stocked with trout by NSW Fisheries which makes it a mecca for trout fishermen. In the summer months there is a wide spectrum of sporting, freshwater fishing and tourist activities that are available all year round in the Snowy Mountains region of the Mount Kosciusko National Park.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Drove to the Lake Eucumbene Dam for lunch, expecting a lovely shaded picnic spot with a table, either looking out across the dam or at the base of the wall. Neither to be found. Followed the road down to the base of the dam to find a “No Entry” almost at the bottom, not at the top of the descent where you would expect. There is a toilet block at the top near a lookout, but no seats or tables. The whole place is a huge disappointment. Everywhere you looked there were Snowy Hydro No Entry signs.
I have been to many excellent picnic areas near dams and this wasn’t one of them. Lift your act Snowy Hydro! There is more to community relations other than generating electricity.

On our visit, the lake is around 33% full, but is still a wonderful sight. While attractive to boaties and fishers, is also nice to drive or walk to waters edge. Building foundations evident near boat ramp at Old Adaminiby. Access is free and uncrowded although limited facilities.

Great for boating and fishing. Though my son didn’t catch any fish despite hours of fishing.
Lake 37% full when we were there so could see some older buildings coming out of the lake. Boat ramp still works at that level and it must be at least 100m long.

My father worked in the snowy mountain hydroelectric scheme in the 1950’s following immigration from Slovenia. As a child, we used to holiday in the Old Adaminaby caravan park (trout fishing on the lake) and nothing has changed!!!
Very quiet and peaceful....

This was a good trip
The drive out is long but we planned our trip that it was on the way
We ended up spending 5 hours there it took 3 hours to catch the first fish and with help an hour later got the second
The fish was cleaned and prepped for us and a bbq provided for cooking it
Chips and salad later lunch was ready and by this time we were starving
The trout was great

Might I suggest you reserve a pool for the adults to fish at having the kids running jumping and yelling as well as poking at the water with poles and nets didn’t help us catch our fish, especially wen you warned us trout have great eyesight and we needed to be quiet
Probably why it took us 4 hours to get a bite

The owners did their best and were polite in making it an enjoyable day out

We stayed at Cool Mountain Lodge which was really comfortable and it was lovely siting around the fire at night. We had also organised them to supply breakfast and dinner as we were staying as a group. I imagine this would be a great place to stay if you were a skier. The view from your room and the guest lounge were great and there were wallabies and Kangaroos grazing under our windows most of the time

The drive out is gorgeous and although you can only take a gravel road down to the dam itself the water is so blue and inviting. Its a shame snowy hydro has closed the main road to public access. But i still recommend a visit if you're ever in the area.

Lake Eucumbene is a well stocked trout lake but they are hard to catch. The area of the Snowy Mountains is very peaceful and relaxing
