We really enjoyed our visit to Historic Merrickville and the historic Blockhouse Museum! The Blockhouse is situated right along side the beautiful Rideau Canal. It's maintained beautifully and if full of amazing artifacts and history of not only the Blockhouse but also the history of the whole town and area! Amazing! Well done Merrickville for keeping history alive!

This looks into 19th century life in a small Canadian village. Many interest artifacts and pieces from the 19th century. Not a lot to see. It will take about an hour.

The blockhouse is one of the last remaining ones on the Rideau Canal. The museum provided an overview of the canal and the purpose of the blockhouse. It also provided some local history that was interesting.

The museum had several exhibits inside and gave a good history of blockhouses in general and of the Rideau Canal in particular. The canal was built for a military purpose and the locks are all hand operated. Before or after seeing the museum, which is free, watch the locks being opened and closed. You can even walk over the locks.

When you visit Merrickville for the first time, a prime attraction has to be a tour of the military blockade next to the locks.

The blockhouse in Merrickville gives a full history of the incredible feat of building the Rideau Canal. There are lots of artifacts, photos, and a good video detailing this UNESCO World Heritage site. There is no charge to enter but a donation is requested. Well worth a visit.

The historical society that looks after this museum is doing a brilliant job. The staff I met were very friendly, professional, and very knowledgable. This museum opens up one's eyes about our not too distant past, how our ancestors lived, worked, and protected the canal. I highly recommend this museum to any visitor to Merrickville.
