A great 13th century circular keep standing on an earlier Norman mound, atop a high spur beside the River Fowey. Twice visited by the Black Prince, it finally saw action during the Civil War. Commanding fantastic views, it makes an excellent picnic spot. Child friendly and dog friendly.

The walk to the castle from the town of Lostwithiel is very pleasant but the castle is the prize. The fact that the site itself is over 1000 years old is fascinating though the current building dates to the 13th Century. This is no less...More

Pleasant walk along country lane and riverside from Lostwithiel carpark (free). About 3 miles round trip. Castle closed in winter though!

I quite enjoyed coming here in the middle of Summer. You do have to pay to enter but it is a nice quiet experience. There are stairs to walk the top perimeter of the castle which would give you the full view of the castle....More

Come and explore this Norman castle and surrounding grounds. The principal rooms are still in pretty good condition and you can climb to the top to get a great view of the countryside. No cafe but you can get drinks and ice cream

Really enjoyed this castle in the countryside, a bit different to the coastal castles like Pendennis and St Mawes. This castle is a ruin but makes for a good hour to amble around it . Very quite and picturesque

It would have been about £4 each but as we joined English Heritage that day, it was included in our membership fees.
