Located in Bury, just 30 minutes from Manchester City Centre, is the award-winning East Lancashire Railway, a heritage railway that runs steam and diesel train services through the beautiful Pennine Lancashire scenery. There are plenty of things to see and do and stations are well equipped for group visits with cafés, pubs, gift shops and a dedicated Transport Museum, housing vintage vehicles, transport memorabilia and interactive exhibits. Guided tours and talks are also available. The railway also has some fantastic events scheduled throughout the year from guided Rail Ale Trail tours of some of the excellent local drinking spots to the nostalgia of their award winning 1940's weekend. Looking for something a little different? Why not indulge in a luxury steam train hauled dining experience on board Orient Express style carriages, learn to drive a train or get snap happy with a Photography Course?

We came here at the weekend with my daughter and our friends and their children and we couldn't have asked for a better day out. We went on the santa special and it's well worth the money! Kids completely entertained and adults too! Parking is limited so best to get there early but there are other car parks close by.

Excellent day out enjoyed by the kids and adults alike ! We parked the car at Heywood Station and boarded the shuttle train service to Bury Station ,both stations were decorated with fairy lights but Bury Station had really pushed the boat out with a beautifully decorated walkway .The staff were very helpful and friendly with most in fancy dress... Took our 4 year old on the Santa express and we were not disappointed. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Each child receives a present from Santa along with a drink and snack. There is also a little tipple for the adults and a mince pie. Really festive experience with carol singing and a brass band. The staff on board the train... More

We took our Grandaughter Evie to this Event. and what a wonderful time we had. The staff and volunteers could not do enough for us and all of the passengers on the Train. We took our seats and heard and video'd the train leaving the station. The staff came around and presented our Grandaughter with a Biscuit Bear, then they... More

We dined on the ELR Dining Train a few days ago. The initial booking was smoothly handled by friendly and helpful ELR staff. Then, when the evening itself came round we weren't disappointed, with excellent ambience, staff, food and wine which could not be faulted. Highly enjoyable and we will be back soon for a return match :-)
