stopped on the way towards the John Day river; another guide book had suggested stopping here. Interesting to take a moment to wander the streets.

We have been to Shaniko a couple times this month. It's an interesting stop and would be a fun place to be on their summer festival weekends. For now, it is truly off-season. The store, Shaniko Trader, is open and there is a Porta-Pot if...More

Neat glimpse of history. Fun to stop and look around. Great ice cream shop. Hotel is shut down. Fill up gas whenever you can.

Shaniko is a nice place to stretch your legs, grab an ice cream, and gander at some old relics of the past. Visit the old jail and gander at some interesting old farm equipment and automobiles.

This in an interesting place but the ghost town we were expecting. There are a few blocks of old buildings and a few stores open in the middle of town. Nothing seems to be coordinated.
