There is one day a year when you can walk or ride your bicycle on the Fremont bridge. The arch takes you higher above the Willamette than any other bridge. The view in August is spectacular. Worth the walk or entering Bridge Pedal "race" (?). (hard to be in a hurry when the view is this great).

This the highest bridge in Portland...Years ago, I always want to drive on this bridge right on the first day that I decided to live in this great city...I finally found the way after several tries and WOW the view from this bridge was magnificent!!!You can see the city of Portland downtown buildings to the south and the riverside business area to the north...There was one time when I've got stuck in the traffic jam right up there and of course I've cherished every moment in my car enjoying the view in a longer moment than usual when just passing by...Its worth a drive if you are just passing by...

The Fremont Bridge is a steel tied-arch bridge that is the most recognizable bridge in Portland, Oregon. It spans the Willamette River connecting downtown to North Portland. It has the longest main span of all the bridges in Oregon. And was modeled after the original Port Mann Bridge in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The Fremont Bridge has teo decks with four lanes of traffic. It is 2,154-feet long. And opened for traffic in November 1973. The parts for the bridge were built in California and assembled here at Swan Island. They were floated up river and put into place on site.
At that time I was working as a newspaper "shagger" delivering the afternoon newspaper-- The Oregon Journal. We used to kill time before going to Mississippi Avenue by parking under one of the supports. I remember all the news about the Fremont bridge and seeing photos of its parts being floated down river in the newspapers and on the local nightly news. It was an amazing to see these photos of the work in progress as they put it into place.
I recently found a nice place to see the bridge in full at a park in the Pearl District. From this park you can take nice photos of the Fremont Bridge and also the old Centennial Mills on the Willamette river with its Water tower up on top of this building that is being demolished. Both are iconic looking and worth seeing.

I crossed this bridge coming down the freeway looking for our exit to the RV Park, so driving a large RV while towing does not provide sightseeing time; however, my copilot wife said the views were wonderful as the traffic was quite slow. I guess this is the highest bridge in Portland, the city of bridges. Once settled we took a self guided tour of the city and found other impressive bridges like the St John.

This bridge carries freeway traffic so normally the driver should be paying attention to the road. If you are a passenger there are beautiful views of the Wilamette river in both directions. There's tend leads you to an industrial area that is becoming gentrified. The east end takes you to neighborhoods of shops and dining establishments along with less desirable areas. It doesn't take you to Fremont Street though. The residents had enough influence to keep bridge traffic off their street. When showing visitors what Portland looks like I have driven a loop of I-5 and I-405 across this bridge and the Marquam bridge. It allows a view of the river and downtown office buildings.

Portland has loads of incredible bridges, with the Fremont being one of the most impressive and probably the highest. The bridge carries I-495 traffic on two levels and offers fabulous views of the city.

This bridge carries the 405 traffic across the Willamette River. It is a very recognizable bridge in downtown Portland. Southbound traffic is carried on the upper deck and Northbound on the lower deck.

An arch shaped bridge that carries freeway traffic on two levels, somewhat north of downtown Portland. It's a nice classic shaped bridge but it's no Golden Gate. I like it because the views of downtown Portland to the south are excellent (you're over 500 feet in the air with nothing blocking your view) and at a diagonal so you can see the city from a nonstandard point of view.

This bridge is picturesque when viewed from afar. Otherwise, it is just a bridge, heavily used by commuters, and of minimal tourist interest outside of those interested in civil engineering or bridge design. Although the arch may be reminiscent of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Fremont Bridge is not designed for daily pedestrian access and there are no climbing tours to the top for a view. Westbound traffic is on the upper level and will provide the passenger some views, but nothing to write home about. Do not be misled by another reviewer thinking you can walk across this bridge any time other than when the bridge is closed to vehicular traffic for events such as the Providence Bridge Pedal or the Providence Stride. There are other bridges along the Willamette River with pedestrian walkways.

When this bridge was finished in the early 70's anyone who wanted could walk across to celebrate. BEST VIEWS of docks, city, mountains. Someone else should be driving if you want to take in the view from a car. Top level is Southbound, Northbound lane is beneath, so limited views.
