Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I gained a new appreciation for this fountain after reading the book by Eugene Snyder "Skidmore's Portland: his fountain and its sculptor : from buckboards to bustles". You can get it at any Portland library and it is a fast read, with photos from the early era of Portland. Back then, Skidmore fountain was the heart of Portland, and was considered one of the most beautiful public fountains in the west (if not the whole US). The man who bequeathed it -- Stephen Skidmore -- was one of Portland's leading citizens and led an interesting life.

Yeah...,the fountain is fun but the surrounding is not...It is not a place where you want to relax and just be quite...

Visited on a Friday afternoon after going to Powell's City of Books. The walk over was along a bit of sketchy areas (walked along Burnside) and the fountain area itself was a little sketchy. Litter, dirty, homeless, abandoned buildings. It was ok in the day but I wouldn't recommend going at night. The fountain itself is ok--not a major destination in itself. There was a fire station just to the south that appeared to have historical fire fighting equipment inside which was interesting.
We continued on to the waterfront and walked along the path--the area seemed to get nicer the further south we went. We walked back to our car along Morrison -- much nicer street, felt much safer.
Not sure where to park specifically for this fountain. Parking in downtown Portland seems to be a nightmare. Street parking and lots are all pay 7 days a week. The cheapest lot we saw was $4/hour with most of them being $5/ hour and $14 for the day. Some stores may have lots (Powell's books has a lot, not sure if it was paid or not, it was full when we arrived).

Hey Portland clean up your city. The last 2 times I have brought people in from out of town we went by the Skidmore fountain. We were harassed by the homeless people both times and we got to watch people take a leak on the sides of buildings in the area. The fountain was the best part though. There were two bums literally IN the fountain taking baths. Not only that, one guy was next to the fountain filling up his water bottle. Then he bent over and poured the water down the his back to try and clean off the poo stains on the back of his pants. Another fine chap was in the fountain using a 2 litre bottle to pour down the front of his pants. GROSS! That is the last time I will bring people from out of town to this area.

In the area around Skidmore Fountain, there is a street market every Saturday and Sunday. vendors sell beautiful handcrafted goods, and many vendors will custom fit items on the spot. Lots of food choices, along with street entertainment. A definite "must-do" in Portland, and only a few blocks from Powells, another must-do.

While the fountain itself is beautiful and in close proximity to the Saturday Market, the area in general has dropped off significantly in the past 5 years. It's a shame because this is such a great area of Portland. Go during the day.

The Skidmore fountain is actually a pretty area. The old architecture that are still remaining and the fountain is self are quite beautiful. Do a little history studying before you go down so you’ll be more knowledgeable of the area. Saturday market right there lots of fun shopping and local gifts. Shop local support small

This is a cool old part of Portland. The problem is that the cool old part of Portland has always been home to a seedier element, and it still holds true today. I would not let my kiddos run free here - too many needles and trash around. It's fine during the weekend markets and this is probably the only place to find quality street performers in the city.

I was following the eye candy with mindless enjoyment when we emerged at the Skidmore Fountain. I felt as if is stepped into a vortex. Wow I thought, a Three Od Cups. Then I dipped my hand in and the water was brilliantly cold. Take that, Pepsi! I was captivated and I came more and more to attention. You might say I awakened. I would. A guy with dirty- blond dreds took his shirt off. I noticed the Sun. Another fellow was standing in Gassho posture meditating. Someone sat down on a blanket. Breathing.

The fountain is beautiful and in a nice square, but we almost didn't notice it for the weird tent city that is the Saturday Market and the 'street performers' and panhandlers encroaching on its space. The pictures of the empty square and fountain are much better for reflection and peace. The current configuration and atmosphere does not do justice to the fountain.
