About
Portland Center Stage at The Armory is the largest theater company in Portland that produces fully professional theatrical production for the community, and is one of the 20 largest regional theater companies in the United States. There are two theaters located inside The Armory: the 590-seat U.S. Bank Main Stage and the 190-seat Ellyn Bye Studio. Established in 1988 as an offshoot of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the company became independent in 1994. An estimated 150,000 visitors attend The Armory annually to enjoy a mix of classical, contemporary and world premiere productions, along with the annual JAW: A Playwrights Festival, and a variety of high quality education and community programs. Eleven productions are offered each season, in addition to roughly 400 community events. The Armory was the first building on the National Register of Historic Places — and the first performing arts venue in the country — to achieve a LEED Platinum rating.

Portland Center Stage puts on a variety of plays each season, with consistent high quality of production, acting, and selection of material. It's a just right size hall, with accessible food and beverage before shows. If one had to pick a bone, it would be too few restrooms, especially for women. That's a bit of a surprise, as this venue was built relatively recently.

This is a modern theater beautifully integrated in a historic armory building. The seats are raked from the stage and all sight lines seem very good. There is no center aisle allowing for the best sight lines, but also the longest trip out from your seat to an aisle if you’re in the middle. The lobby and facilities are first rate, attractive, comfortable and spacious.

We were terribly disappointed in their performance of Midsummer Night's Dream. For the price of tickets, we were expecting a reasonable budget for appropriate costumes. At least one of the actors didn't seem to know his/her lines. I have seen many high school plays, with minimal budgets, performed much more professionally. Being a former high school Shakespeare teacher & having taken classes to countless Ashland performances (as well as seeing plays at Stratford-upon-Avon) I expected to see some authenticity instead of a "woke" performance. I could have driven to Ashland for that. We left at intermission, knowing we were missing the highlight of the "play within a play," but not wanting to suffer through until the end.

I’ve been to multiple Portland Center Stage plays lately and have to say I’m not really impresssed with what Marissa Wolf is producing. It seems like the writers and actors are really trying to create somehting special, and have checked all the requisite boxes for an ‘important’ production, yet somehow miss the mark. Call me old fashioned but I like to leave a play thinking about whatever the play was addressing, however I find I quickly forget what I just saw after attending recent Armory productions. Luckily they have a wonderful building which occupies my attention. Now if Marissa can just fill it with a great play.

Live music and wine before the show in stylishly hip foyer setting, was a novel idea. Comfortable theater seating, of which you can take in unfinished beverages - apparently you just need to ask for a lid for your wine-sippy cup. I paid $47 for a live musical show - and felt completely engaged in the performance.

Just saw Ain't Misbehavin'. Great production!!! Loved the theater. Well designed - nice open reception area. Comfortable seats with lots of leg room (husband in 6'3") and we really appreciate the space.

We have been to the theater in the Armory Building on two occasions. We have totally enjoyed the experience. Besides enjoying excellent performances, we enjoyed the uniqueness of the building.

We visited over the weekend late Jan 2014. The theater was pretty close to our hotel (downtown), and close to a lot of great shops and Powell's books. It's quite easy to make an evening out of it. We saw Chinglish and really liked it. The actual theater was really well decorated and had a good feeling to it. It allows guests to mingle before the show. We ordered tickets online and there was no trouble at all getting them via will call. We sat near the back and had no issues seeing the show, Volume was a little softer back there, so if you are hard of hearing I would recommend being closer to the stage.

We have been season subscribers here since they opened and thoroughly enjoy the productions, the theaters and the building itself. Individuals interested in theatre should check with them about tours because the building is very interesting and getting an opportunity is well worth the time to reserve the free tour. Also the productions are excellent and rival those found in any city in the US. We will continue to return again and again even though it is about 85 miles from our home.

No bad seats, but it is pretty large so I like seats A-E. Best part is that the restrooms are off lower side of stage, so if you have seats close to the stage, you can make it to the restrooms before the middle and back end get there.

I am planning on visiting I June this year. Are there any hotels around the Armory?
Written 13 April 2015
Hello Sandra,
The Mark Spencer Hotel is the official hotel partner of Portland Center Stage and an excellent choice - it is very close to the Armory.
You can find all sorts of information about hotels and attractions near the Armory on Travel Portland's website. It's a great resource for visitors.
Wishing you all the best for your upcoming visit!
