The Wildwood Trail runs through Portland's Forest Park complex, easily accessible from various access points in the heart of the city. One can access it by bus or driving into the Forest Park area and parking at one of many parking area of different sizes, or walking in from some trail access points in neighbourhoods.
This trail has easier parts and more strenuous parts but at no point is it particularly strenuous. This and its with hits length through the park make it great for many people and for those who want something vigorous as well as those who want a moderate hike in the woods, long or short.

The trail goes through a beautiful, green forest with amazing views of nature and the city. There are some moderate inclines, and it can get muddy during the rainy season, it’s advisable to check weather before going. Overall, it's perfect for a peaceful and scenic hike.

My husband and I really wanted to experience Forest Park while visiting Portland for the first time but were somewhat intimidated by so many options for Trailheads and were also a little concerned about potentially getting lost. After a little research we decided to drive up to Pittock mansion and start from there....amazing! We're from Iowa so don't judge me when I say there were some steep climbs but overall I'd say this was an easy hike with some very pretty scenery. There were enough people on this particular trail that you felt safe and we had no trouble staying on marked trail. One thing I particularly enjoyed is that EVERYONE we passed smiled and said hello, we even stopped and chatted with a couple of especially friendly local hikers. I'm excited to explore more of the park, especially the Wildwood trail but the hike from Pittock mansion was a great first hike!

Even on a crowded day, it is still a lovely hike in Forest Park. Many other trails shoot off this one.
Don't leave anything valuable in your car though. The area is known for break ins. A lot of homeless hang out here, out of sight, but they are there.

Wildwood Trail (actually 30 miles trail distance) is always pleasant to run or hike, regardless of weather or the time of day. Mud and fallen trees add to the excitement during the winter months--good trail shoes will make a world of difference in the rainy season. In the summer, the forest provides plenty of shade from the hot sun even in the middle of the day. Few (if any) places in or near cities can match the beauty of Wildwood Trail on a cool, misty morning with a few beams of sunlight piercing down through the canopy.

I have not hiked the Wildwood and its various offshoots that make up the Sylvan ridge area of the '40 mile loop' for many years.
If you visit Portland or even live here and want a little exercise and great views without leaving town, you can't go wrong with this hike.
We started from the parking lot above the zoo but there are starting points all over. Off of Burnside, the Pittock Mansion, the Hoyt Arboritum, etc.
It's not particularly challenging, but bring water. There are various loops to choose from and adapt your hike from. The trails are quite defined and the connectors trails are easily marked. There are a lot of various offshoot trails and can be confusing, but there is no way to really get lost. You are contained within a city and very much not alone.
I recommend this excursion very highly. Very refreshing and a great way to appreciate Portland's natural beauty.

What a great hike & it is right in our back yard.
Pretty busy trail with lots of people running, walking & hiking.
Anyone that is up for a challenge, I recommend getting up early & doing the whole thing.

Wildwood Trail is an absolutely amazing place to visit. The scenery is breath taking. We can not wait to go back next year.

Having never been to the northwest, and only having one free afternoon, this was a no brainier for me. Hiked with friends from the rose garden up to Pittock mansion. Entering the trail was tricky, but it is fairly well maybe once you're on it. Gorgeous hike through the evergreens. Not strenuous, but not a stroll through the park either. Plan to finish before it gets dark (we got caught with the sun going down and had to hike back along the road)

This trail can be reached via multiple connection points around the Eastern sections of The Hills. I recommend connecting via Tunnel Trail, since this creates a nice 2.5 mile loop for quick adventures. The ascent and descent are relatively comfortable, with difficulty only coming from weather related mud or crowds. I would definitely recommend hiking to the Pittock Mansion lookout with a picnic on a sunny, clear day. Moreover, this trail has a good distribution of Portland flora, so whether you're visiting or touring around your backyard, you'll be impressed!

Hello! I am going to be in Portland in June and have about 2 hours to hike on a Friday afternoon. I would like to hit the "witches castle" and see Pittock Mansion. Does anyone know where I need to start and end to make that happen and most importantly can I see both of those in a 2 hour round trip hike?
