Water fountains

Nice water fountains throughout the city. There are about 52 original Benson Bubblers. The fountains were a gift to the city from Simon Benson. We had a nice refreshing drink.

Love the story! Simon Benson, a prominent logging company owner in the mid-19th century had these put in so his loggers would have good clean water when they came into town. He was a "tea-toddler" so hoped it would keep many of his men out of the bars. Don't know if that worked but Portlanders and visitors alike have benefited... More

Tasty the water from a shared pipe isn't as cool as it used to be. Almost as interesting a the water fountains in Rome. Wish there were more. Fascination with these is age related, so if you have a 5 year old give it 30 minutes.

This is about 2 minutes of fun but after that you like what else is there to do? Still a fun idea and bravo.

I didn't bury the lead. These are cool and interesting. DON'T DRINK FROM THEM THOUGH. I watched numerous homeless people use them as washing stalls, garbage cans and restrooms, on top of drinking out of them. I also saw many children playing in them, which is fine, but I'm not drinking out of something that people are using as a... More

one of the coolest things in the city are the benson bubblers. simon benson donated them to the city around 1912 and now there are 52 of these four bowl water fountains scattered around downtown portland; and about 20 more that have one bowl. one sure place to get a drink is in front of the simon benson house which... I saw these around downtown and ended up googling them to find out what they were. At first I thought they were water "art" installations. To find out that they are part of Portland history and donated made it all together more interesting.

There was a history and description of these at the hostel where we stayed and after reading it, I saw them everywhere. The water tasted very good and it was good to know that it was fresh and not recycled and that the water efficiency of the fountains was improved several times and they use minimal water.

In scrolling through the "attractions" of Portland, I am amazed at what I am finding to write about so here is another quick note. Being from CA, my 1st thought was, wow, I'll never see this at home with no water. But in Portland it rains all the time so water is of no concern. These were an interesting site... More
