There are 3 separate units for John Day Fossil Beds. We went to the Painted Hills Unit and Sheep Rock Unit. The Painted Hills are amazing....the colors beautiful. The Condon Paleantology museum in the Sheep Rock Unit is absolutely mind boggling. So much information and the displays are phenomenal. You won't be disappointed.

Beautiful. Make sure you go down to the trail heads to get up close with the painted hills. Sunny days are best.

This is a must visit site. We visited the painted hills site in Sept 2016 it is truly breathtakingly gorgeous, They have about 4-5 different trails you can hike plus loads of differing areas for taking pictures

The visitor center has a good museum. Lots of hiking trails. Its too bad people cant stay on the trails, especially on the painted hills. Kinda ruins the effect.

We stopped at the Mascall Formation Overlook briefly on the way to John Day. From this vantage point above Highway 26, you see the John Day valley, Strawberry Mountain Range, Picture Gorge and the Mascall formations. Wish we would have had more time to actually explore more of the Monument.

We traveled through the Painted Hills section of the John Day National Monument and it was outstanding. The colorful hills were beautiful with the reds, golden and white colors to name a few. It was not as extensive as I anticipated but I am certainly glad that we took the time to visit it. A trip well worth the distance... More

I think the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is one of the most interesting places in Oregon to visit. When planning your visit, however, it's important to keep in mind that this place has 3 "units" (Sheep Rock Unit, Painted Hills Unit, and Clarno Unit) and that these units are separated from each other by quite a few miles.... Museum was well done and informative. After walking through the museum, we took a ride down Hwy 19 towards the Painted Hills and Cathedral Rock. Well worth the time! The rock formations were phenomenal !

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The Painted Hills were beautiful to see. We were able to follow some of the trails and visit some of the displays. The scenery is incredible. It is well worth a visit.
