South Sister is one of the Cascades' tallest mountains, and an active volcano (fortunately, not active in the last few years, but you never know). Enter the hike from Century Drive, and enjoy a long steady uphill through the woods. Great variety of volcanic rocks and features, due to the freshness of flows. The last hike up the moderate slope... More

Ten adults set out to hike the South Sister to the summit. We made a detour to Lake Moraine which was beautiful and calm in the am. You can see the reflection of the mountain off the lake. The hike to the summit is pretty much straight up and down. The terrain is mainly loose gravel. I would definitely invest... More

Truer words were never spoken about this hike. There is no technical gear needed but it's 11.6 miles up and down with a 4800+ foot in elevation gain. Five of us off-duty firefighters started about 7 am and returned about 5pm after spending almost an hour at the summit. I'm in my late fifties and this was a really tough... More

This is absolutely worth the effort. Its tough, so make sure you are in appropriate shape and bring enough food, water, and appropriate supplies. Glad we had good boots, trekking poles, 3+ liters of water a piece, and warm clothing. People get lost, so unless you are use to hiking at night, I'd make sure to get of the mountain... More

Our intent was to hike to the top but we took a wrong turn and ended up on the Pacific Crest Trail which turned out to be a unique experience as we met quite a few people with backpack and gear who were making the whole trek. We intent to go back and take the trail to the top--must have... More

During summer when snow has melted from the route, South Sister is a non technical climb (meaning you won't need special equipment such as ropes and carabiners) that can be done as a very challenging day hike or a moderate backpacking trip. The main consideration is a significant amount of elevation gain and travel in high altitude. Weather can be... More

I read about South Sister climb on several websites; it was tough to know what to expect. My wife and I (both in decent shape and 41 years old) started at 6:30 and were in the car at 3:30, so it was a 9 hour hike: 6 going up and 3 going down. While we were passed on the ascent,... More

This whole area is just stunning. I highly recommend hiking to the summit to get the stunning views from the top but if you don't have the time to summit at least hike the area. No technical gear is needed to hike. It is a long hike, average 9 hours round trip but worth it.
