About
This mature forest course is the discerning golfer's dream with 18 totally different memories for both the high and low handicap player. Wide rolling fairways, well bunkered greens, subtle elevation changes and numerous lakes and streams make each hole a new challenge and a pleasure to play. Whether the par 3, #3 along the river is to your liking or the entirely redesigned par 4, #18, the many enhancements add a new dimension to the Mill River golf experience. As can be expected you will need to use your entire game as you venture around this parkland setting. One of Prince Edward Island's most popular and affordable playgrounds. Rated fours stars by Golf Digest Places to Play, which raves, "Outstanding, plan your next vacation around it". SCORE Golf Magazine rated Mill River in the Top 3 Best Golf Courses in Atlantic Canada. Mill River Golf Course is located at Mill River Experience, just 37 kms West of Summerside, off of Route #2.

Golf coures was excellent condition! Unfortunately as for the “Stay” part of our ‘Play and Stay Package’ i cant say was the same!

Our rooms were decent,

The restaurant was HORRIBLE all arround, from service to the food to the quantity and quality.

As for the all the staff , they were not helpful whatsoever, none of them
Knew anything about the resort let alone anything within an hr’s drive.
Concidering we were 2 young couples both of us celebrating our anniversaries, that was also NOT taking in concideration whatsoever by staff. Been to many other hotels that would have offered to buy a bottle of wine or chocolates.

These guys...NOTHING!

The pool was okay, for the 1hr that we were allowed to be there for . And 40 min of that hr, the slide was off as well as the hot tub!

I would come back up to golf, but NEVER to stay at that hotel again.

Recomendation 0/10.

Getting Back to Normal at Mill River
Jul. 2020
The four eastern Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland & Labrador have recently opened their borders to tourists from these provinces in what is known as The Atlantic Bubble. My wife and I took the opportunity to travel to PEI from Nova Scotia for a mini golf vacation, starting with Mill River on the western part of the island. It turned out to be a great decision.

Mill River is located a few miles north of the small town of O’Leary in the westernmost part of the island. The reason I call it an ‘almost hidden gem’ is that while the quality of this course is well known, its location is well away from the cluster of courses around Cavendish, Charlottetown or the east end of PEI. Thus it is often overlooked when golfers plan an itinerary for a golf vacation on this island known for its great golf.

It was opened in 1971 from a design by prolific Canadian golf architect Robbie Robinson who learned his trade from Canada’s most famous golf architect, Stanley Thompson. In the 1990’s Graham Cooke made changes to six holes. It has played host to the Golf Channel’s Big Break PEI and is closely associated with PEI native Lori Kane who won four times on the LPGA. Prior to today’s game I had only played the course once and that was before the Graham Cooke alterations. My memories of the course were still vivid after forty years and I had been planning to return for many a year.

The first post Covid thing I noticed was that only three people at a time were allowed in the pro shop which is small to begin with. The staff remain behind the newly installed plexiglass which is becoming standard everywhere in every business. I wish I had shares in a plexiglass maker.

We shared a power cart which had the option of dropping down a heavy plastic divider between driver and passenger, but since we share a bed, we figured we could share a golf cart without this necessity. Also, Covid has meant the removal of ball washers from the tee boxes. I’m glad I don’t own shares in whoever makes those.

Mill River has five sets of tee boxes and plays 6840 yards from the tips and as short as 5282 from the women’s tees. I opted to play the seniors at just under 6,000 yards. Unfortunately the weather was not very cooperative with periods of drizzle interspersed with just gray skies. Not great for photos. There was next to no wind.

We had the second tee time of the day and followed a foursome that kindly let us play through on the third hole. Our total game time was well under four hours.

Mill River is a parkland course the fairways are lined by mature trees, both hardwoods and softwoods, that give it a very pleasant easy on the eyes appearance.

What makes Mill River so memorable are a number of things including the undulations in the greens which are in excellent condition. You really need to know how to read breaks well and figure out the right pace to score on them. That being said and no doubt aided by the damp conditions, the greens were not punishingly fast. If they were, given their design they would be a nightmare, so not cutting them as short as possible makes for a very fair challenge – if you get the read and the pace right.

It turns out that a combination of a mild winter and very few rounds being played because of Covid has meant that the courses in PEI are in the best condition they have ever been. That is a definite silver lining and a compelling reason to come to the island to play.

I have included photos of a number of holes that in my opinion are exceptional. These include the first hole that is one of many severe doglegs on this course. The fifth hole which is a lofty par three over water. The seventh hole that has a creek running right down the middle to create dual fairways. The 13th hole that is a world class par five with water in play on the third shot. The fourteenth which is a great risk/reward par four. And the eighteenth which is a terrific finishing hole.

Mill River should be on every Atlantic Canadian golfers must play list and once the rest of the country opens up, on all Canadian's list.

Slow and bad beer selection
Aug. 2019 • Couples
It took us almost 2 hours to play 4 holes! Only moosehead beer products on course. They don't allow bottles on the course. So, if you have 6+ hours in your day to play 18 holes, like Moosehead light, and enjoy only being to purchase beer from a cart girl who might come around once in your round, this is your place! We got a partial refund. But, still ended up paying over $100 CAD for 2 players to play 4 holes.

The golf course and the staff are really nice. We had a really good time playing and the views and grounds are very nice. Not too buggy !! What a plus LoL The restaurant is ok, not fantastic but ok but the staff friendliness makes up for it. The rooms have been renovated and are really nice. I would recommend it for a weekend away !

Great Golf Course
May 2019 • Friends
This is a very good golf course. From the time you enter the club house to the time you putt out on 18. The staff are very helpful getting you off to the course. The course is a very clever mix of long and short holes with some wide fairways and some tightly shouldered targets. There are some generously large greens but not a level spot to be found on any of them. Make sure you have all your clubs, as you will need them. This track can be unforgiving and frustrating your first time around because of the many blind corners and hills, but the second round will be much more fun once you know what is ahead of you.

A resort in midst of a change.
Apr. 2019 • Friends
This resort caters mainly to a golfer and the course is beautiful.
Restaurant is in need of work on food creativity, pricing, and consistent service.
Plenty of adjacent outdoor activities makes this a worth-while stop on your visit to beautful Prince Edward Island.
Would like to see a broader scope of events and activities that cater to the non-golfer. This resort seems to be in a place of transition but recent renovations are nicely executed and show promise.

I love this spot. Golf, skiing, snow shoeing, tubing, great fitness centre, pool, hot tub, and awesome food!
the “glass” of wine they served me to drink with my steak was massive! Rooms are perfect, staff is attentive! No question; this place is a must.

Very nice golf course
Aug. 2018 • Friends
We spent the afternoon playing 18 holes, the lady on driving the beverage cart was always there when we needed a drink. The course is one of the nicest on PEI, brand new pro shop and it is challenging and we'll laid out. If you want to play a very nice course on the western side of the island then this is it.

Beautiful Course
Jul. 2018 • Couples
Stopped for one night to play at Mill River. It is a beautiful course with lots of variety. Course was in excellent condition. We had been warned that bugs can get bad but it was windy so wasn’t an issue. We would come back here again. The little house on the tenth with washrooms is so cute with canteen services too.
