About
Established in 1963 the West Coast Heritage Centre Zeehan has continued to grow and offers visitors a comprehensive experience and understanding of the history, heritage and culture of the Tasmanian West Coast. Visitors can experience everything from an Edwardian picture show in the historic Gaiety Theatre to the modern day underground mine simulation as part of their visit. The galleries and exhibits highlight the efforts of the pioneers', both men, women and children who carved an existence from the remote wilderness in search of Tasmanian mineral wealth and developed the region as we know it today.

Luckily we decided to head into Zeehan for a coffee, the website telling us that the main attraction is closed on a Friday. Surprise, surprise! ! Driving past and the OPEN sigh was outside. Some four hours later we departed having feasted our eyes on the original School of Mines display, mineral samples, penny farthing bike, a working model of the Mount Bischoff ore dresser, plaster casts, the history of Kelly and Crotty, photo, graphs, etc and that was just the inside. Outside is a collection of locomotives, mine machinery, engines and other equipment unfamiliar to us. Into the underground mine simulator and assorted equipment, the theatre and the model of the Renison Tin Mine. We ended our tour by visiting the interiors of the former Police Station & Courthouse and the Gaiety Theatre and the associated displays. Fantastic relics of a former era and wonderful repurposing of heritage buildings

Must see if you are in the area. This centre is very informative and I was impressed by how well it was presented. Miners certainly did it tough as well as the women and children. Todays living certainly has improved and one to be thankful for. ENTRY is $25 an adult, well worth it. We spent 1.5hrs wandering around as there is so much to take in. Very cold so take a jacket.

This is an amazing museum made up of many different buildings in Zeehan. An impressive amount of informtion on mining in the area. There is also access to the old courthouse, Gaeity theatre, and a large area of outside exhibits. Be prepared to do a lot of reading and look at lots of photos. Very interesting and I wish we had more time to spend here.

The Zeehan Heritage Centre is fantastic! We initially though the price was a little high though after spending 3 hours here it was well worth the price.
Whilst it may look small from the outside, times it by 20 and that is the actual size when you account for the underground mining area, multiple buildings and the huge outdoor grass areas.
I would highly recommend a visit here - even our young children loved it!

Large, well laid out museum with many good displays, but substantial entrance cost. For someone interested in engineering, mining, minerals or history, particularly of the West Coast, many hours could be spent.

Thank you for your review of the Heritage Centre. You are correct in saying that many hours could be spent here at the Heritage Centre which is why our entry tickets are valid for 7 days, allowing visitors to truly immerse themselves in the history we have on display. We are a not for profit organisation that strives to keep our entry price low whilst still maintaining our extensive collection and buildings so that the history of this beautiful region is kept and available for those to enjoy.

At $25/$20 concession, this was a wonderful way to spend over 2 hours exploring the history of the West Coast and Zeehan. The Center encompasses many different areas including the old picture theatre, Masonic Room, Women's room and a stunning display of rocks and minerals. There was also lots of machinery including a number of trains. It was very clean and wonderfully set out run by enthusiastic young people.

This museum has many different areas highlighting at one time the third largest city in Tasmania.
Once a mining town, even having its own TAFE for mining studies. There are so many exhibits , you have to experience them yourself. My only complaint is with the geological display is that they don't tell us what the minerals are used for in today's world. If you going to Strahan or Queenstown make sure you go to Zeehan. Coffee van at the trains is pretty good.

Thank you kindly for your five star review, we are so glad you enjoyed the numerous exhibits we have on display. Your recommendation will be taken in for consideration, it is very important that our patrons have an idea of what the many minerals and ores are used for and would add to the overall experience, thank you again.

Although not open at the time visited, the museum located in the old School of Miones building it looked to provide some interesting history of Zeehan, a fascinating almost ghost mining town. The town was named after the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman's ship Zeehaen and in 1882 silver and lead was found here and at one stage it had over 10,000 residents and 20 plus hotels in the Main Street.Just walk the main street and you get a feel for what it once was. This old town had potential as a tourist place but iots location is probably an issue.
