Facinating. It was a grerat opportunity to see items created from the different woods "in the raw" and also "fininshed items".
The people were knowledgeable friendly and most of all "true".
NOthing was out of bounds so we could ask the "silly" question

We visited the sawmill to watch the demonstration of the sawmill in action. It was really worth the visit to watch the 140 year old saw cutting through the beautiful Huon pine like it was butter, and the smell from the wood was sublime.
We ended up chatting to Brendon and purchasing a beautiful slab of 500 year old huon pine to take home.
Don't miss visiting this piece of history run by 3 generations of the Morrison family.
Thanks Brendon for helping us with a wonderful piece of history to put in our new home....and helping us to attach it safely to the car!
Highly recommend, there's lots of beautifully hand made and local Tasmania products to buy.

Once an old industrial woking wood mill, now only used for hobby sawmilling.
Some very beautiful pieces of work for sale, finished and raw wood.
The owner is very talented in his skills of turning wood into masterpieces.

This working Huon Pine sawmill is absolutely the "must visit" in Strahan. The old machinery, still working is fantastic. The process of recovering decades old fallen Huon Pine logs (that look worthless) and turning them into beautiful useful timber pieces is amazing. There is so much to see and so much to ponder buying - but the real bargains are the many varied pieces of unfinished Huon Pine pieces (offcuts) that are practically given away (some for as little as $2). This mill is worth a good hour of your time.

Great working sawmill that you can walk around and watch the guys in action and they are very helpful if you have any questions. Unfortunately the shop was closed but the sawmill had a few things in there for sale.
Great works of art in chopping boards etc. Well worth a visit to check out the huon pine.

Near the tourist centre of Strahan this is well worth a visit. We arrived near 5pm so now work happening however still worth looking at the olde world e tools and saws.
Giftshop a definite plus is offcuts of Huon Pine for $5 (see photo) among other more expensive gifts.

At 3:00pm, we went to Morrison's Huon Pine Mill and watched the current descendent of the Morrison clan use a vertical saw to cut a Huon Pine log. The saw is powered by an electric engine these days but previously it was steam. The big cross cut saw moves up and down and an automated ratcheting crank pulls the cradle through on which the log is pinned. Although it seems slow, it cuts at 3cm a minute. Morrisons have permission to retrieve fallen logs from the wilderness areas or logs and branches found floating. No live trees are to be felled. Commentary was a bit sporadic. Mor risings themselves seem like down to earth people.

Morrison’s sawmill was a very interesting place to visit. We were able to see a huge commercial saw in action cutting Huon pine logs. A commentary was provided along with this activity which was very informative. The gift shop had many beautiful wooden gifts to purchase.

trees harvested here. The wood here is from reclaimed trees that were felled years ago. If you are into wood carving, off cuts of Huon Pine, Myrtle or Blackwood are available for less than a dollar a piece.

This was a perfect end to an incredible day after the World Heritage Cruise (Red Boat - locally owned). The beautiful smell to Houn Pine can be with you forever by purchasing up your own little piece of Tasmanian Timber. The only wood 🪵 at the Mill is from what naturally falls…..it is not logged - it is protected timber.
